VHS prices depend on the recorded duration
The published VHS entries are £18.00 for a cassette of 1-3 hours and £28.00 for a cassette of 3-8 hours. Those bands make duration an important part of planning a transfer. A handwritten label may describe only one programme even when other recordings follow it, so give the business your best estimate and say when the total is unknown.
The two entries meet at three hours. Ask which price applies to a recording of exactly that length, and how recordings outside the stated ranges are treated. Confirm the final quote and any tax or other charges before committing; the published figures do not settle those details.
Camcorder cassettes and film reels need separate decisions
The video-tape page groups 8mm, Hi8, Digital 8, VHS-C and Mini DV at £16.00. VHS-C therefore has its own published entry alongside other compact formats, rather than appearing under the full-size VHS duration bands. Read the wording on each cassette shell and keep it with its case. If identification is uncertain, send a clear description or photograph when enquiring.
For cine film, the published 8mm prices are £20.00 for a 50ft, 3 inch reel, £52.00 for a 200ft, 5 inch reel and £86.00 for a 400ft, 7 inch reel. These are film measurements, not VHS recording allowances. Standard 8mm or Super 8mm sound transfer is an additional service, separate from frame-by-frame scanning, with audio and video synchronised afterwards. The stated cost is £25.00 per 400ft reel. Mention any possible soundtrack when discussing film.
Make the 30-day video link part of your plan
Every video transfer includes a private online link to the video, available for 30 days. That is an access window for the finished video, so arrange time to save and check the result when it arrives. It does not state how long the conversion takes. Ask about the expected completion date, downloadable file format and whether the output will suit the devices your family uses.
For a mixed order, also establish how many files you will receive and how recordings will be named. Decide whether you want each tape kept together or need particular sections identified. Once files arrive, check the opening, middle and end, listen to the sound and look for missing passages. Compare them with your notes before the link expires, and raise any questions promptly.
Prepare the collection without risking the originals
Create a short inventory with one identifier per cassette or reel, its label, likely date and any known concern. Keep those identifiers on your order notes so a recording can be matched to the returned file even if its title is vague. Ask a relative to help distinguish similar holidays or birthdays; their recollection can be more useful than a guessed date.
Tell the provider about cracked cases, loose tape, mould or previous playback trouble before sending anything. Ask whether assessment or repair is available instead of attempting to play a visibly damaged cassette. Agree how originals will be returned and retain them after conversion. Save the digital files in at least two separate places, and confirm that each copy opens before considering the job complete.
Keep the recordings useful beyond the download window
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not digitise tapes and is not part of 8mm2Digital. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB shared across an archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your converted videos when deciding what to upload, and retain your independent backup copies.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories to photos and home videos. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping everyone find memories by year even when the original cassette says only summer holiday. A relative who recognises a school uniform or a former home may help narrow that date later.
For a family birthday, a Live Watch Party can synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, while voice and text chat let people share recollections. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories can then collect new birthday photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership; uploads go into the event album, and closing the link keeps those memories.
