DVD or flash drive: compare the actual tape prices
After Image Video publishes separate prices for Video Tape to DVD and Video Tape to Digital File, with additional DVD copies at $18.95. Its Video Tape to Digital File listing gives a separate first-tape-to-flash-drive price, additional tapes to flash drive at $20.00 each, and an additional flash drive at $19.95. These are different pricing structures, so count both your tapes and the copies you need before requesting a total.
A DVD may suit someone who already uses a disc player. A digital file is a useful starting point for copying to a computer, making backups and sharing through a private archive. Ask which file type the transfer produces and whether it plays on your intended devices. The published tape prices do not settle taxes, longer-tape charges or processing time; get those details with your quote rather than applying the DVD duration allowance to the flash-drive service.
Sort VHS from camcorder tapes and film reels
The transfer list extends beyond full-size VHS to VHS-C, 8mm video, Digital8, Mini DV, Beta and Mini DVD, and also names PAL to NTSC conversion. That breadth is helpful when a collection includes recordings from different cameras. Make a short inventory using the format printed on each cassette, and flag any overseas recordings when you contact the business. If you are unsure about a label, ask for help identifying it before choosing a service.
Keep 8mm video cassettes separate from 8mm film reels when discussing the order. After Image Video also lists film transfers, but film footage prices and high-definition film descriptions do not establish VHS prices or VHS resolution. Ask for the tape output specifications directly. Separate groups on your inventory will also help you compare quotes without mixing a charge per foot of film with a charge per tape.
Make the first conversation count
The contact page lists After Image Video at 4342 Harrison Ave. #1 in Cincinnati, with phone number 513-574-7736. It publishes business hours as 9:00 to 5:00 EST, Monday through Friday. Contact the business to arrange how to submit your collection and establish a realistic completion date, especially if the videos are intended for a birthday or family gathering.
Number each tape and keep a matching list of handwritten titles, likely dates and any recording problems you remember. Tell the provider about cracked cases, visible mold or a tape that previously jammed, and ask whether it can be assessed. Avoid trying to play a visibly damaged cassette just to identify its contents. Before handing anything over, clarify whether blank sections affect the order, how files will be named and how the originals will be returned.
Check the returned videos before filing them away
When the conversion is complete, review every recording at the beginning, middle and end. Check that the picture and sound match what you expected, that the full recording is present and that each filename corresponds to the correct tape. If something seems missing, use your inventory to describe the exact cassette and point in the recording when you raise it with the provider.
Keep the original tapes and make another copy of the digital files on a separate storage device. A flash drive should not be the only place a family recording exists. Preserve the files as delivered, then create clearly named copies for everyday viewing if needed. Invite a relative to help identify people and places while those details are still easy to recall.
From a transferred file to a shared family evening
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of After Image Video. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB of storage shared across an archive, with no card needed. You can invite relatives, organize photos and home videos in albums, and use Timeline with exact or approximate dates to find memories by year.
For a family anniversary, an uploaded home video could become a Live Watch Party. Playback is synchronized, the host controls play, pause and seek, and relatives nearby or far away can use voice and text chat. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories. Relatives can add present-day pictures alongside the older recording and leave comments or stories that explain why it matters.
