Alive Studios VHS Digitisation for Teignmouth Families

ALIVE STUDIOS offers VHS, Hi8 and MiniDV transfer, with digital videos supplied on a dual USB stick and uploaded to its private Alive Cloud service. For families looking for VHS digitisation in Teignmouth, the area recorded in our listing, the useful starting point is deciding which recordings to send and what you want to do with the files afterwards. Its website describes a Devon business serving clients across the UK and welcoming orders worldwide.

Send the earliest recording you still have

Alive Studios recommends original source material, such as camcorder tapes, even when you also have VHS or DVD copies. Its explanation is that analogue copies can lose detail during copying. That makes a mixed collection worth sorting before ordering: a VHS labelled Wedding might duplicate a smaller camera cassette, rather than contain a different recording.

Give each cassette a simple reference number and photograph its label. Ask relatives whether they recognise the occasion or remember making a copy. Keep those notes separate from guesses about the contents. If you find mould, a cracked case or exposed tape, describe it to the studio before attempting playback or cleaning. Ask whether it can assess the damage and what any additional work would cost.

USB viewing or an editing project?

The domestic tape service specifies MPEG-4 files on a dual USB stick. Alive Studios also lists a professional tape service covering formats including U-Matic, Betacam and Digital Betacam, with a choice of MPEG-4 or ProRes. If your collection includes an unfamiliar cassette from a school production or professionally filmed event, identify the format before assuming it belongs in a domestic order.

For ordinary family viewing, ask how the supplied files will play on your intended television or computer. For an editing project, explain the software you plan to use and ask which output is suitable. A USB stick is a delivery device; make an additional copy on separate storage rather than letting that one stick become your only digital version.

Get one quote that includes collection

The domestic HD transfer page displays more than one price schedule. One gives £80 per tape for a single tape; a separate sale schedule lists £48.75 per tape for 1-4 tapes. Treat these as reasons to request a confirmed quote rather than calculate an order from whichever figure looks most appealing. Ask which schedule applies, whether VAT is included, whether recording length affects the price and when the work can be completed.

Collection from home or work is advertised as free when spending over £100 and £10 when spending under £100. The wording leaves exactly £100 unclear, so check that boundary if relevant. Delivery back is advertised as free on all orders. Confirm the packing instructions and arrangements for returning your original tapes when booking.

Check the transfer while the order is fresh

Alive Cloud is described as a private account, free for 14 days, with an optional extension costing £24 per year for 10GB of storage. Plan to download and check your files promptly rather than assuming this initial access is permanent. The studio's published terms also require problems with an order to be reported within 14 days of receipt.

Compare the delivered files with your cassette list. Watch the beginning, middle and end of each recording, check that sound matches the picture and look for missing sections or an unexpected ending. Send any query with the cassette reference and a precise playback time. Keep your physical originals, preserve an untouched copy of the delivered files and make a second backup before renaming or editing your everyday viewing copies.

Put dates and names around the footage

After conversion, Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is separate from Alive Studios and Alive Cloud. Its free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your videos before choosing what to upload.

Start with a recording that relatives can help identify. Memrial's Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a holiday with a remembered year but no certain day can still be found by year. Invite relatives to add comments and stories about the people on screen. An approximate date with a useful description is better than assigning a precise date that nobody can support.

Watch an anniversary recording together

An anniversary is a good reason to bring a converted wedding video back into family conversation. Memrial's Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, while voice and text chat let everyone discuss the same moment. The free plan allows 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.

For photographs and videos from the anniversary celebration itself, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their uploads collect in the event album. Closing the link retains those memories. The older recording and the new celebration can then sit together in a private archive, with the family supplying the context that connects them.

Your family space	How it works	A moment to try
TimelinePut the years back in order	Add dates to your photos and home videos, then explore them together by year. If you only know roughly when something happened, use an approximate date and let relatives help fill in the story.	Find the summer you all went away together. Add the names, place and little details that the camera never recorded.
Live Watch PartiesSame video. Same moment.	Choose a home video from your archive and invite relatives to watch online. Playback stays in sync, with the host controlling play, pause and seeking. Talk through voice or text chat while you watch, whether you are nearby or miles apart.	Put on an old birthday tape and pause when someone spots a familiar face. Hear the stories from the people who were actually there.
Event MemoriesEveryone's view, together	Open an event for a birthday, reunion, wedding or other occasion and share its secure contribution link. People sign in to add photos and videos to the event album without needing to be members of your archive. Close the link when you are finished; the contributed memories stay.	Collect this year's reunion photos in one place, then revisit an older reunion video together. The occasion gets its own album rather than another scattered message thread.
Your private archiveStart with 2.0 GB free	Keep photos, home videos and their stories in an invite-only family space. Your free storage is shared across the archive. Add a few favourite memories first, then invite relatives to contribute.	Give a short home-video clip a title your family will recognise. Ask who remembers the day, and keep their replies with the memory.
