A transfer list that reaches beyond VHS
ALTA’s tape transfer page includes VHS, Betamax, 8mm video, Hi8 video, Digi-8 and MiniDV. It also names professional formats such as Betacam, BetacamSP, Digibeta, DVCPro and DVCam. That breadth is useful if your collection combines home recordings with material made on different equipment. Write down the wording on each cassette before requesting a quote, rather than assuming every small tape is the same format.
Film is a separate service: ALTA lists 8mm, 8mm with sound, Super8mm, 16mm and 35mm film transfers. An 8mm video cassette and an 8mm film reel therefore belong on different parts of your inventory. If relatives have contributed both, separate them clearly and ask for each medium to be included in the estimate.
Choose electronic files with everyday playback in mind
ALTA publishes DVD, Blu-ray and electronic files as video transfer destinations. Its transfer page also gives digital file examples including MOV, AVI and M4V. These examples establish that file transfer is part of the offering, but they do not settle which file specification will be delivered for your particular order. Ask for an agreed format and explain whether you want to watch on a computer, share with relatives or upload to a private archive.
A disc can suit a household that still uses a disc player. Files are generally easier to copy, organize and back up, although compatibility matters. Before commissioning a large collection, ask whether a sample can be checked on your intended devices. Keep a list connecting each tape to its resulting file, especially when several cassettes have identical handwritten labels.
Build an order that is easy to quote and collect
Start with a numbered inventory showing format, label text and any known recording length. Note cracked cases, loose tape or other visible damage without opening the cassette. Ask ALTA how it handles those conditions before attempting playback yourself. Include the recordings you most want to recover first, so the initial order has a clear priority.
The published details here do not establish transfer prices or a completion schedule. Request a written estimate covering the tapes, chosen outputs and any additional work before proceeding. Agree how originals and finished copies will be returned. ALTA’s order form states that it is not responsible for a job or master left on its premises for more than 30 days. This is a collection-related condition, not a promise of a 30-day transfer time, so arrange collection directly.
Review the recordings while the labels still make sense
When your files arrive, open every one and check sections near the beginning, middle and end. Listen as well as watch: speech, music and quiet stretches can reveal different issues. Compare the file list with your inventory and raise questions while you still have the tape labels and order details together. Keep the originals after conversion and maintain another digital copy on separate storage.
Bring a relative into the review when a date or face is uncertain. A label reading “summer” may become a useful approximate year once someone recognizes a child’s age or a holiday location. Preserve that uncertainty in the description rather than turning a guess into a precise date. Small notes about people and places make recordings easier to understand later.
From ALTA’s transfers to a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of ALTA’s service. You can invite relatives, organize albums and add comments or stories. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed; check your file sizes when deciding what to upload first.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping you find memories by year even when a cassette only suggests a period. For a birthday gathering, a Live Watch Party can synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seeking, with voice and text chat alongside playback. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
Event Memories can collect new birthday photos and videos beside the older recordings. A secure occasion contribution link lets people who sign in contribute without becoming archive members. Uploads go into the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories. This gives the family a way to add today’s celebration to yesterday’s footage.
