Start with the way you want to watch
Atac Digital lists USB, hard drive and DVD as video delivery options. These describe how footage reaches you; they do not specify the digital file type. Ask which file format is supplied on USB or hard drive, how recordings are divided, and whether the files will play on the devices you already use. If you want to upload a video to a private archive afterwards, having an accessible digital file is a practical priority.
DVD may suit someone who still watches through a disc player. A drive can be useful when you want to copy recordings between devices and keep backups. Before choosing, ask a relative who will actually watch the footage what works for them. Also check whether storage media is included in the quote and what happens if you request more than one delivery option.
Arrange a Corstorphine appointment
The website places Atac Digital in Corstorphine and asks customers to get in touch to make an appointment before dropping media off. Its tape conversion information accepts drop-offs and advises careful packaging and a trusted courier when posting. An appointment gives you a chance to describe the collection and agree the handover details before travelling.
Make a short inventory first. Number each cassette, copy its existing label, and note anything you know about the recording, such as a wedding year or a holiday destination. Photograph the labels before handover. If a cassette looks mouldy, has a cracked shell or contains loose tape, describe that condition and ask how it should be handled. Avoid testing a visibly damaged cassette in a household player.
Understand the timing and charging conditions
The tape conversion page gives a typical turnaround of 7-10 days, depending on tape duration and editing. It also says urgent jobs can be prioritised if you let the business know. Treat that as a reason to discuss a deadline, rather than a guaranteed completion date. For a birthday screening or anniversary, agree when you need the finished files and allow yourself time to check them.
The same page says blank or damaged tapes are not charged and tapes with under 2 minutes of footage are free. Those conditions are helpful, but they do not establish a price for your whole collection or promise that damaged recordings can be recovered. Request a quote covering your actual tapes, desired output and any editing. Confirm any delivery charges or tax treatment when agreeing the total.
Keep related audio in the conversation
Atac Digital also publishes audio transfer information, with USB, CD or a download link as audio delivery options. This may be relevant if family recordings include sound-only material alongside home videos. Keep the two jobs clearly described when enquiring, because audio options and charges should not be assumed to apply to video tapes.
For either kind of recording, tell the business which parts matter most before discussing editing. A long pause may be uninteresting, while a quiet conversation at the end could be the moment someone wants to hear again. Ask what changes are proposed and whether you can retain a complete transfer as well as any shorter version.
Check the transfer before putting the tapes away
Atac Digital says original tapes are returned in the condition received, securely packaged and sent through a reputable courier. Agree the return arrangements as part of your order. When the digital version arrives, compare the files with your inventory, check the beginning and end of each recording, and sample the picture and sound at several points.
Keep the originals and make another digital copy in a separate place. Label files descriptively, then invite a relative to help identify people and dates. Someone else may recognise a face or remember which summer a scene belongs to. Record uncertainty honestly instead of assigning a precise date that nobody can support.
Bring the finished memories into Memrial
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos after conversion. It does not convert tapes or form part of Atac Digital. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed. Add albums and invite relatives; Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates so memories can be found by year.
A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice or text chat. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours monthly and up to 6 participants. For an anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership, their photos and videos enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
