VHS and camcorder recordings can be considered together
The published tape list includes VHS, Super VHS, VHS C, Video 8, Digital 8, Mini DV, Micro DV, HDV, Betamax and Betacam. AVP Studios also states that NTSC and SECAM tapes can be converted to modern formats. That matters if recordings arrived from relatives abroad: mention any system markings when you enquire instead of assuming every cassette was recorded the same way.
For a mixed collection, make a short inventory before arranging the work. Copy the format printed on each cassette and preserve its handwritten label. A wedding recorded on VHS and a later birthday on Mini DV might belong in the same family album, but keeping their original references distinct helps you match the finished files to the physical tapes. Ask about any format you cannot identify and describe visible damage before sending or bringing it in.
Choose the finished video before ordering
AVP Studios says it outputs finished videos as MP4 files and can create files in a digital format of your choice. Its listed delivery options include DVD, hard drive and USB flash drive. Those are different ways of receiving the work, so explain both the device you plan to watch on and whether you want files for a family archive.
A USB drive can be convenient, but check what your television or computer accepts before choosing it. If you also want a DVD, ask whether digital files can be supplied alongside it and what the complete order will cost. The published information does not establish transfer prices, delivery charges or completion times. Request a quote covering your actual tape count, requested output and any extra work before committing.
Silent cine film and other parts of the collection
For cine film, AVP Studios lists Super 8mm, Regular/Standard 8mm and 16mm silent film. Its published guidance says it cannot transfer 9.5mm film or sound film at present because its Retroscan HD scanner handles silent film only. Film cleaning is available through the premium service; this is a film-specific offering and does not establish a damaged videotape repair service.
The wider service list includes compact cassette, open reel to reel in 2 and 4 track, vinyl, DAT and Mini Disc, with CD and MP3 described as popular audio outputs. Slides, negatives and photographs are also listed for scanning. If a recording has accompanying pictures or a spoken introduction on a separate cassette, note the connection in your inventory so the materials can be reunited after conversion.
Arrange the studio visit, then check the returned files
The published ordering guidance allows an online order followed by contact to arrange a studio drop-off. Office visits are by appointment only, and the contact page recommends calling or emailing before visiting because there are two studios. Agree the location and time directly rather than treating the listing address as an invitation to arrive unannounced.
Before handing anything over, photograph the labels and agree how the originals will be returned. When the digital files arrive, play a sample from the beginning, middle and end of each recording, checking sound where the original has it. Compare the files against your inventory and flag missing recordings promptly. Keep the original media and save another digital copy on separate storage; a single USB drive should not be your only copy.
From transferred recordings to a private family archive
AVP Studios advertises password-protected cloud storage and download for video and cine film transfers, with further details available on enquiry. Ask about access duration and download arrangements if that option suits you. Memrial is a separate private family archive for the digital memories after conversion; it does not digitise tapes and is not part of AVP Studios.
Memrial provides 2.0 GB of free storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. You can invite relatives, organise photos and home videos into albums, and add comments and stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find memories by year even when a tape label only says something like a childhood summer. A relative may recognise the place or occasion and help fill in the missing context.
Make the first viewing a family occasion
Once a home video is uploaded to Memrial, Live Watch Parties synchronise playback for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat for sharing reactions. The free allowance is 3 hours each month with up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link retains those memories. That gives the newly converted recordings a place alongside pictures from the reunion itself, while relatives can add names and stories that make the older footage easier to understand.
