Full-size VHS and camcorder tapes in one project
Alongside VHS, VHS-C and Super VHS, Beacon lists 8mm cassette, Hi-8, Digital 8 and MiniDV transfers to MP4 digital files, USB and external hard drives. If recordings changed format as the family changed cameras, make a separate count for each type. Read the labels on the cassettes rather than grouping everything small under one name.
Be careful with the word 8mm: an 8mm video cassette is different from a reel of 8mm film. Beacon also lists 16mm, 8mm and Super 8mm film transfers, but those belong to a separate service. Keep reels and cassettes in separate groups so the conversation about your project starts with the right media.
Use the $29.00 tape rate to start the conversation
The published video tape rate is $29.00 per tape for all video tape formats. A tape count is therefore useful before requesting a quote, even when you do not know the running time of every recording. Ask for the total for your actual collection, including any storage device, taxes or additional work that might apply. The quoted rate alone does not settle those details.
Choose a few priorities if you are transferring a large collection in stages. A clearly labeled birthday or graduation may be easier to identify than an unmarked cassette. Write down which recordings matter most, but keep the unlabeled ones on your inventory: their contents could become clearer once someone can watch them.
Arrange the Lakewood handover before you travel
Beacon says it prefers appointments so someone is available when you arrive. It offers drop-off and pick-up appointments at its studio inside robis Lakewood Camera + The Print Refinery. Its published address is 10015 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood, Washington 98499. The contact page also invites customers to discuss dropping off or shipping a project; agree on shipping arrangements before sending originals.
For handover, number each tape and make a matching list with the label text, approximate year and any known playback problem. Photograph the labels for your own reference. Flag cracked cases, loose tape or suspected mold and ask whether the item can be assessed. Avoid opening the cassette or repeatedly testing a damaged tape yourself. Ask about expected completion and return arrangements during the same conversation.
Decide what the MP4 files need to do
Beacon lists MP4 files, USB and external hard drives for its VHS transfers. Think of the file format and the delivery device as two parts of the decision. Explain whether you want to watch on a computer, copy recordings to relatives or upload selected videos to a private archive. Ask whether you should supply a drive and how the files will be named or divided.
When the files arrive, check the beginning, middle and end of each recording and listen to the sound. Compare the filenames with your inventory before renaming anything. Keep the delivered files as a master copy, make another backup in a separate place and retain the original tapes. If you create shorter clips for sharing, save them separately so the full recording remains available.
Put dates and family voices around the recordings
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Beacon. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Select the recordings you want to share within that space while keeping your own backups.
Invite relatives to help identify people, places and occasions. Memrial Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to make memories findable by year, so a recording remembered only as a particular childhood summer can still have a useful place. Albums, comments and stories can preserve the details that were never written on the cassette.
Watch an old celebration and collect the next one
A Live Watch Party can bring relatives nearby or far away into the same uploaded home video. The host controls play, pause and seek, with synchronized playback and voice or text chat. Pausing a wedding recording might give an aunt time to name someone in the crowd. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For a new anniversary or reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. It gives the family a way to add today’s gathering alongside the older celebration they have just watched.
