Match each tape to the right transfer
Bomark lists VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi-8, Digital 8, DV tape and Betamax among its transfer formats. That makes the service relevant to collections assembled across several generations of cameras, rather than just full-sized VHS cassettes. Its video 8mm listing should not be confused with a promise about every type of cine film.
Before getting in touch, make a simple inventory using the format printed on each cassette. Note any dates or titles already on the cases, and flag tapes whose contents are uncertain. If a cassette has a cracked shell, visible mould or a damaged ribbon, describe that and ask whether it can be assessed. Avoid opening it or attempting a repair just to find out what is recorded.
Read the starting prices with their time limits
The published VHS-to-MP4 or DVD price starts at £15.00 for up to one hour. Camcorder tapes to MP4 or DVD also start at £15.00 for up to one hour of tape. Betamax has a separate starting price of £50 based on a one-hour tape. These are starting figures with duration conditions, not a complete price for any cassette you bring in.
Give Bomark the number of tapes, their formats and any known running times when asking for a total. For longer recordings or a mixed collection, request a breakdown so you can decide which tapes to convert first. Confirm the final charge, any tax treatment, the cost of your chosen delivery medium and the expected completion date. A wedding recording with a known duration is easier to quote than several unlabelled tapes.
Choose a file you can keep using
Bomark advertises video tape transfers to DVD, MP4, USB, cloud and YouTube. Those labels describe different things: MP4 is a file format, USB is a way of carrying files, and cloud or YouTube involves online access. Ask exactly what you will receive and whether more than one output can be included in your quote.
For a private family collection, a downloadable file gives you something to copy, check and organise yourself. A DVD may suit a relative who prefers their existing player, but consider keeping a digital copy too. If choosing an online option, ask about access permissions and how to download the original delivered file. Decide whether you want complete tape recordings or separate clips, without assuming editing is included.
Arrange the handover, then check the results
The studio encourages customers to hand tapes over in person. Agree the arrangements before travelling, and take your inventory so both sides can identify the recordings. Keep labels on the original cases and use removable notes for extra information. Ask how the originals will be returned and whether anything needs special handling.
When the files arrive, play the beginning, middle and end of each recording. Check that picture and sound are present, that the recording appears complete and that filenames match your inventory. Keep the physical tapes after conversion and make a second digital copy in a separate place. These are sensible checks for your own collection, rather than stated Bomark procedures.
Plan beyond the six-week file window
Bomark says it keeps video files for up to six weeks before deleting them from its system. It also advertises Bomark Cloud Service after conversion to MP4 or DVD. Clarify the terms of that option if it interests you, and arrange your own copies promptly instead of treating the temporary file window as a long-term backup.
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Bomark Studios. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across an archive, with no card needed. You can add photos and home videos, organise albums and invite relatives. Keep an independent backup alongside anything you upload.
Turn a recording into a family conversation
Once a video is in Memrial, Timeline lets you use an exact or approximate date to find memories by year. If a holiday tape has no date, a relative might remember the summer from a house, a car or someone’s age. Record an approximate date honestly and add the story as it becomes clearer.
Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining voice or text chat. The free allowance is three hours each month with up to six participants. For an anniversary, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already collected.
