A tape conversion enquiry with room for cine film
The website describes Bushey Digital as a tape to digital conversion service. Its wording about all tape types appears alongside Super and Standard 8 cine, so a family with both videotapes and film reels has a reason to enquire about the two together. That broad statement does not give a detailed list of individual cassette formats or recording standards. Send the labels or clear photographs of your media and ask for confirmation that each item can be handled.
Separate tapes from reels in your inventory. Give every item a simple reference, such as Tape A or Reel C, and record whatever is already written on the label. If a VHS cassette says only 'Christmas', leave its year uncertain until someone recognises the people or setting. This avoids turning a guess into a permanent file name. Tell the converter about cracked cases, loose tape or visible mould before attempting to play anything.
The storage question for more than 35 tapes
Bushey Digital's prices page says that, on average, more than 35 video tapes may require a USB hard drive, priced at £85. The words 'on average' and 'may require' matter: this is a storage consideration for larger collections, rather than a fixed rule that every thirty-sixth cassette triggers a charge. It is not a quoted conversion price per VHS tape. Ask how the length of your recordings affects the proposed storage and whether that drive is appropriate for your order.
Before accepting an output, explain how you expect to use it. Watching on a television, keeping an untouched master copy and uploading selected videos to a family archive are different needs. Ask which file type will be supplied, how files will be named and whether your intended device can play them. Agree the complete quote, including storage and any additional work, and clarify the tax position because the quoted hard-drive figure does not specify it.
Arrange contact before planning a drop-off
The contact page gives 47 Ashfield Ave, Bushey, Herts WD23 4HG and the phone number 020 8050 4181. It says telephone lines are open seven days a week from 9am to 8pm. Those are telephone contact hours; arrange any visit or handover directly rather than treating them as walk-in opening times.
The prices page also mentions an express 48 hour turnaround at £7.50 extra per tape or reel, alongside physical tape repair. Check whether the express option applies to your media and when its clock starts. If a cassette is damaged, request an assessment and repair quote rather than assuming a successful recovery. Establish the ordinary completion estimate too, particularly if you want recordings ready for an anniversary or family gathering.
Check the recordings before filing them away
When the files arrive, compare them with your inventory and play the beginning, middle and end of each recording. Listen for sound, check that the picture plays correctly and look for anything unexpectedly missing. A childhood recording may contain several occasions on one tape, so do not identify the whole file from its first minute alone. Raise questions promptly while you still have the tape references to hand.
Keep the original tapes and make a second copy of the digital files on separate storage. A USB hard drive can be convenient, but a single device should not be your only copy. Invite relatives to help identify voices, places and dates. Their recollections can be recorded as comments or notes without changing the original video, and differing memories can remain visible until the family has worked them out.
Bring the converted videos into a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not digitise physical tapes or form part of Bushey Digital's service. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose recordings and photos that fit that allowance while keeping your full collection backed up separately.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find memories by year even when a label is incomplete. A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice and text chat. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.
For a family anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership to add photos and videos to the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. That gives relatives a straightforward way to add their own pictures alongside an older recording of the same people.
