Separate the cassettes from the film reels
Capture's published videotape offering starts from $19.99 and names VHS, Hi8, MiniDV and Betamax. Its videotape page also discusses Digital8. Before requesting a quote, make a simple inventory that records the format printed on each cassette, its label and whether you know what is on it. A small camera tape and a reel of exposed movie film belong on different parts of that list.
If your collection includes 8mm film, Capture publishes a separate rate of $19.99 per reel covering the first 100 feet, plus $0.20 for each additional foot. That is a film rate, not a VHS calculation. Ask for an itemized total for the actual collection, including your chosen delivery method and shipping, rather than multiplying a headline starting price and treating it as the final bill.
Choose a download plan before choosing a disc
Capture includes 90 days of free cloud access for streaming or downloading digitized videotapes. It lists a custom USB drive at $14.99 and says DVD is available as an add-on at checkout. The videotape page also describes downloadable digital video files in SD, FHD or 4K. Confirm which option applies to your order and what file type you will receive; a resolution label alone does not tell you how an old recording will look.
Think about the person using each copy. A DVD may suit a relative who already watches discs, while downloadable files are useful for keeping computer backups and uploading selected videos to a family archive. If you choose USB, check the actual television or computer you plan to use. Download your files within the stated access period and keep your own copies rather than making temporary cloud access your only storage plan.
Confirm the route to Capture before packing
Capture's videotape page presents mail-in and drop-off options. It also says you can purchase Roundtrip Shipping for a prepaid inbound label or arrange your own shipping. The Norcross building address on this listing should not be treated as confirmation of a walk-in counter. Get the correct shipping or drop-off instructions directly from Capture before sending anything or making a trip.
Photograph the cassette labels and give each item a short inventory number. Keep the list yourself and ask how to associate those numbers with the order. Mention cracked cases, loose tape or other visible damage before packing; ask whether the item can be assessed and whether any extra work would cost more. Avoid attempting a repair simply to get a cassette ready to send.
Check the copies while the labels are still handy
Capture states that videotape originals are shipped back to you. When the digital files and tapes are available, compare them with your inventory. Open every file, sample the beginning, middle and end, and check that sound plays where you expect it. Record any apparent omissions or playback problems clearly so you can ask about them with the relevant item number.
Keep the originals after conversion and retain an untouched copy of the downloaded files. A second copy on separate storage gives you another way to recover them if one device fails. Invite a relative to help identify people, places and approximate years before renaming everything. Preserve the original label wording in your notes, especially when a confident-sounding family guess might later need correcting.
Use the digital copies to reconnect the family
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Capture's service. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. You can invite relatives, organize albums and add comments or stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates so a remembered summer can still be found by year.
For a family reunion, a Live Watch Party can synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat for shared reactions. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, their photos and videos enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
