Preview first, then choose the recordings
Cinemack invites people who are unsure what is on their tapes to arrange a visit for a quick shared preview. That is particularly relevant when labels describe a television programme but someone remembers a family recording further along the tape. A preview can help you decide which tapes deserve a full transfer, though you should agree what can realistically be checked during the appointment.
Before contacting the business, give each tape a simple number and note whatever its label says. Ask relatives whether they recognise dates, places or handwriting. Keep guesses separate from confirmed details: “possibly a childhood Christmas” is more useful than a confident date that later turns out to be wrong. This small inventory also makes it easier to match returned files to the originals.
VHS, camcorder tapes and cine reels need separate decisions
The published video list covers VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Mini DV, Hi-8, Digital 8 and 8mm video. Cinemack also says broken or damaged tapes may be repairable and still convertible to disc. Treat that as a reason to ask for an assessment, rather than a guarantee that a particular recording can be recovered. Describe visible damage before trying to play a fragile tape.
Cine film is a separate service. The website names Super 8 and Standard/Single 8mm cine, with MP4 as the standard conversion format, and says damaged reels may also be repairable. Do not confuse an 8mm video cassette with an 8mm film reel when preparing your enquiry. If the collection includes both, separate them in your inventory so the quote can distinguish each type.
Use the video prices to frame a complete quote
Under Video to MP4, Cinemack publishes £14.00 per tape for 1-5 tapes and £12.00 per tape for 6 or more. The same published details list DVD copies at £4.00 each and USB copies at £6.00 each for 4gb. Those figures give you a starting point for an enquiry, but ask for a complete quote covering your tape count, chosen output and any repair work. The quoted details do not specify VAT treatment or a recording-length limit.
Agree a completion date directly if the recordings are needed for a birthday or family gathering. A date for another service is not a tape-transfer promise: Cinemack’s published scanning times concern scanning, rather than VHS. Give yourself time after collection to check the files and organise anything you plan to show.
Choose an output you can play and keep
Cinemack lists video conversion to MP4 and says all transfers are available on disc or USB, with other file formats available on request. Discuss the actual device you will use: a DVD player, computer and television may have different requirements. For a family archive, ask whether the delivery includes accessible video files that you can copy and upload, and confirm how those files will be named.
When you receive the result, open every file and sample the beginning, middle and end. Check that sound is present where expected and that each file matches your inventory. Preserve the physical originals, keep a separate backup of the digital files and avoid making your only copy the USB you pass around the family. If something seems missing, your numbered list gives you a clear way to explain it.
Bring the converted recordings into family life
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Cinemack’s service. You can invite relatives, organise photos and home videos into albums, and add comments or stories. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed; the allowance is shared across the archive.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping the family find memories by year even when the day of a holiday or celebration is uncertain. A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice or text chat. Free Watch Parties include 3 monthly hours and up to 6 participants.
For an anniversary gathering, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. It is a practical way to put a converted anniversary tape beside photographs relatives take at the next celebration.
