A DVD for watching, files for working with
The provider says video tapes can be transferred to DVD or digitised to files, including MP4, supplied on a Sandisk USB stick or external hard drive. It also names MP4, AVI and QuickTime files for editing on a PC or Mac. Those options make this a relevant enquiry for someone who wants to revisit recordings now and perhaps make shorter family edits later.
Explain what you plan to do with the result: watch through a television USB socket, edit on a particular computer, or upload videos to a private archive. Ask which file option suits that equipment, whether a sample can be checked, and what storage media are included in the quote. Keep a complete transfer as your preservation copy even if you later cut a highlights version.
Read the duration bands before counting tapes
The published Video Transfer to DVD list covers VHS, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, DV and HDV. It gives £20.00 for up to 30 minutes, £22.50 for up to 90 minutes, £25.00 for up to two hours and £30.00 for two to three hours. Any Betamax tape adds £8.00 to those listed prices. These are useful starting points for a conversation, with DVD as the stated output for these bands.
The digital file service separately advertises transfer prices from £15.00. That starting figure does not explain the cost of your whole collection or establish that every VHS tape costs £15.00. Request a current quote for your chosen output and recording lengths, including any storage media, delivery and applicable tax. If a cassette label says E180, describe it as the tape capacity unless you know how much footage is actually recorded.
Keep camcorder bulk rates separate from full-size VHS
For a collection of smaller camcorder tapes, the price list has a separate bulk offer covering VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, DV and HDV. It lists £15.00 each for ten or more camcorder tapes and £13.50 each for twenty or more. The stated duration is up to 60 minutes, with an additional £3.00 for recordings from 60 to 90 minutes. Full-size VHS is not named in that bulk-format list.
Sort mixed collections by the format printed on the cassette rather than by the event written on its label. A wedding might span a full-size VHS copy and several original camcorder recordings. Give each item a simple reference number and photograph its label. Ask whether different formats can count together towards the camcorder threshold and which output the bulk quote includes.
Agree the handover and protect the originals
On its transfer page, David Strelitz Video Productions says films can be delivered personally in Basildon, Essex, with free parking, or sent by secure carrier. It also says work can be returned by secure delivery at additional cost. Confirm how those arrangements apply to your tapes and agree an appointment or dispatch instructions before travelling or posting irreplaceable recordings.
Send an inventory with the order and retain your own copy. Flag cracked cases, loose tape or signs of mould before handing anything over; ask whether the provider can assess the problem rather than assuming restoration is included. Request the expected completion date and how original tapes will be returned. When files arrive, check the beginning, middle and end of each recording, listen to the sound, and compare filenames with your inventory. Keep the originals and make a second digital copy on separate storage.
Turn the transfer into a family record with Memrial
Once the digital videos are ready, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of this provider. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the sizes of the returned files before deciding which recordings to upload first.
Invite relatives to help identify faces and places. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording remembered only as a childhood summer can still be found by year. Albums, comments and stories give family members space to add context without changing the preserved video.
For a birthday catch-up, Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video while the host controls play, pause and seek. Relatives nearby or far away can use voice and text chat; the free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants. Event Memories can collect new photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, uploads enter the event album, and closing the link retains the memories.
