Match the cassette to the right transfer
The published videotape list covers VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8mm, MiniDV, Digital 8, Betamax and 3/4-inch U-Matic. This matters if the living-room recordings and camcorder footage have ended up together. A smaller cassette is not necessarily the same format as another small cassette, so copy the wording printed on each shell rather than guessing from its size.
Give each tape a simple reference number and keep a matching list of its label, likely contents and any problems you already know about. Photograph handwritten labels before changing anything. If a cassette has a cracked case, a loose section of tape or signs of contamination, describe that condition when you enquire. Ask whether it can be assessed and what any additional work would cost; the format list does not establish a repair service. Avoid testing a questionable tape in an old player just to find out what is on it.
Choose computer files around how you will watch
D&D's website explicitly offers videotape transfers as AVI, MPEG, MOV and MP4 digital files for computer use. These are useful options to discuss before ordering. Ask which output the business recommends for your particular tapes, whether a sample can be checked on your devices, and how the finished files are handed over. A listed file extension alone does not tell you the resolution, compression settings or resulting file size.
For a family that mainly watches on phones or a television, explain that use plainly. For someone planning to edit footage, explain the editing software and whether the goal is a short compilation or a complete preservation copy. Confirm whether each cassette will become one file or several, and how recordings will be named. Keep the full transfer even if you later make shorter clips: the conversation before or after a birthday song may be as interesting as the song itself.
Separate movie reels, audio and photographs
There is more here than videotape conversion. The film service lists 8mm, 16mm and Super 8mm, including sound and silent Super 8, transferred to DVD or digital files. It also invites enquiries about frame-by-frame high-definition transfers. That invitation belongs to movie film; it is not a promise that a VHS recording will become high-definition footage.
The audio service covers cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes and records at 45, 33 1/3 and 78 rpm, with remastering to CDs or digital. The website also lists slide and picture conversion to digital files and slideshows. Keep these media groups separate in your inventory. A family history project might need several kinds of transfer, but ask for a quote that identifies each group so you can choose priorities without confusing film lengths, audio recordings and videotapes.
Make the Livonia enquiry specific
The contact page publishes hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday and 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, with Sunday closed. Confirm those hours before traveling. Bring your inventory to the conversation and ask for the current price basis, any charges for damaged or blank tapes, the expected completion date and the arrangements for returning originals.
Once the files arrive, compare them with the inventory. Play the beginning, a middle section and the end of each recording, checking sound as well as picture. Flag missing material or playback problems promptly, while your reference numbers are still easy to match. Keep the original tapes and create a second digital copy in a separate location before making edits or reorganizing the files.
Let relatives help identify the finished recordings
After conversion, Memrial can provide a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is separate from D&D's transfer service. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes when deciding what to upload. Albums, comments and stories give relatives somewhere to add names and context, while Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help find memories by year.
For a birthday gathering or a quiet evening with relatives farther away, Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video. The host controls play, pause and seek, and everyone can use voice or text chat. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, their photos and videos enter the event album, and closing the link retains those memories.
