A mixed collection can start with the tape formats
Diamond Digitize lists VHS, VHS-C, 8mm video cassette tapes, Hi-8 video cassette tapes and Mini DV tapes. These are separate formats, so read the labels on each cassette rather than describing everything as VHS. Its list also includes DVDs, photographs, negative strips and 35mm film slides. The 8mm entry refers to video cassettes; it should not be taken as confirmation that the business transfers 8mm movie film reels.
For a first inquiry, make a simple inventory with the format, label text and quantity. Give each item a short identifying number and photograph any handwritten sleeve before separating it from the tape. If several relatives have contributed material, record who owns each original. That helps you decide which items to prioritize and makes it easier to check the collection when it comes back.
The five-tape offer and the included USB
The published video price is $25 per tape for all video tape formats, with a bundle of 5 tapes for $100. Each order comes with 1 free USB. For a family deciding where to begin, that makes five selected tapes a clear starting point for a quote. Ask how the bundle applies to your particular mix, whether any recording-length conditions apply, and what the final total will be before handing over the originals.
The photo prices use different units: photo prints are $0.35 per print, photo slides are $0.50 per slide, and negative strips with 4 frames are $2.00 per strip. Keep those quantities separate from the tape count. The website also notes that each DVD holds up to 4GB of data. That is a capacity statement, not a recording-time allowance or confirmation of a particular DVD price. Ask about any DVD option separately if you want one.
Arrange the Quincy handover before setting a deadline
Diamond Digitize says tapes and photos can be dropped off at its home office in Houghs Neck, Quincy. It also offers to come to you within a 15 mile radius for a small additional fee. Confirm the appointment, collection eligibility and actual fee directly; the published wording does not specify the fee amount. The business quotes an average turnaround time of 2 weeks, so treat that as an average when planning a birthday screening or family gathering.
Its return policy says all tapes and photos come back with the new USB drive holding the video or photo files. Make your inventory part of the handover conversation and agree how each file will be matched to its original. A short label such as Smith wedding, tape 2 is more useful later than an unexplained file number.
Set expectations for the picture you already have
Diamond Digitize states that it digitizes materials in their existing state and does not offer quality enhancement services. A transfer should therefore be approached as a way to access the existing recording, with its original limitations. If a tape has visible damage, a loose housing or signs of mold, describe the problem before booking and ask whether it can be handled. Do not attempt a repair or test a suspect cassette simply to complete your inventory.
Before choosing your output, ask which video file format will be supplied and whether it will play on the devices your relatives use. On receipt, try representative files at the beginning, middle and end, listen for sound, and compare filenames against the item list. Keep the originals and make another digital copy on a separate drive. The delivery USB should not become the only copy of recordings that cannot be replaced.
Connect the recordings with the people who remember them
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Diamond Digitize. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your files' sizes when choosing what to upload, and keep independent backups alongside the archive.
Invite relatives to help identify people, add stories and place recordings in context. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping the family find memories by year even when a cassette only says summer vacation. A photograph and video from the same trip can become easier to understand together.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives near or far join voice or text chat. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed.
