Match each cassette to the transfer menu
The VHS, VHS-C and S-VHS entry lists $20.00 for 1-60 minutes in NTSC or PAL. Video8, Hi-8 and D8, and MiniDV and DV-CAM, also have published 1-60 minute entries at $20.00 for NTSC or PAL. Beta MAX and Super BetaMax Hi-Fi are listed on the same duration and price basis.
HDV is different: the menu specifies NTSC only and $25.00 for 1-60 minutes. U-Matic, 3/4 and KCA are listed at $40.00 each for 1-60 minutes in NTSC or PAL, as are BETACAM SP, DIGIBETA and BETACAM SX. These distinctions matter more than the cassette looking vaguely familiar.
Treat those figures as duration-specific menu entries. A two-hour VHS recording needs its own quote; the published one-hour figure does not establish the bill for it. Ask how longer recordings, blank sections, output media, taxes and any extra work affect the total.
Arrange the handover before making the trip
Digital Arts Plus asks customers bringing an order to the studio to call and make an appointment, then obtain the studio address. Its website separately gives a mailing address in Mission Viejo and names USPS Priority, FedEx and UPS for sending orders. A shipping destination should not be treated as an open walk-in counter.
Before the appointment or shipment, number the cassettes and photograph their labels. Keep a short inventory with format, estimated running time and any notes about the recording. If a tape has visible mold, a cracked shell or a history of jamming, describe that before trying playback. Ask whether it can be assessed and what any additional work would cost.
Get the VHS file specification in writing
The video-transfer page mentions MP4, ProRes and AVI, plus USB flash drive, hard drive and Dropbox storage, in wording explicitly about film transfer. That is useful context for an output discussion, but it does not settle what your VHS order includes. Request the precise video-file format, delivery method and associated charges for your tapes.
Explain your intended use: watching on a television, sharing with relatives or editing short excerpts. Ask for a file you can play on your own devices, and whether longer recordings arrive as one file or several. Also agree on tape return and an expected completion date before handing over the collection.
A mixed collection can include reels and photographs
Digital Arts Plus also publishes 8-16mm film transfer at $0.29 per foot for a 1920 x 1080 HD digital file. Sound processing for sound film is listed separately at $0.20 per foot, including sound synchronization, audio leveling and noise reduction. Those are film charges, not VHS rates.
Its scanning services cover 35mm slides, medium-format negatives, photo albums and photographs, with JPEG and TIFF outputs described up to 4K resolution. If your project includes both cassettes and pictures, label them separately and ask for a quote broken down by service. Keep the original order of an album documented so its sequence can still tell the story.
Review the recordings while the labels are still handy
When files arrive, compare them with your inventory. Play the beginning, middle and end of each recording, checking voices as well as the picture. Confirm that the final scene is present and that every labeled cassette has a corresponding file. Raise any gaps promptly, with the tape number and playback time.
Keep the originals and an untouched copy of the delivered files. Make another backup on a separate device or storage service before editing. Ask a relative to help identify people, places and dates; a handwritten label such as "summer trip" may become much more useful when someone recognizes the location.
Turn a completed transfer into a shared family evening
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes or form part of Digital Arts Plus. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping relatives find memories by year even when a cassette label is uncertain.
For a reunion, upload a home video and use Live Watch Parties to watch together nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours monthly and up to 6 participants.
Event Memories can collect new reunion photos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership, and uploads go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories, leaving that new gathering alongside the older recordings.
