Read the two-hour allowance before counting tapes
The published VHS page lists $17.99 per VHS or VHS-C tape, up to two hours. Its broader video-transfer price list adds $8.99 for each additional hour and sets a $50 minimum order. A small batch therefore needs a quote that accounts for the minimum, while longer recordings need their running time considered as well as their cassette count.
Other listed video charges include an additional $10 for PAL/SECAM, cloud upload at $19.99 and tape repairs starting at $10. HD upscaling is listed at $10 per tape. Ask how each charge applies to your particular collection and whether tax or a storage device adds to the total. Upscaling is an output option to discuss, not a reason to expect newly captured detail from an old recording.
For a mixed camcorder collection, the same video list shows $17.99 per MiniDV tape and $17.99 per Hi8 tape up to two hours. Keep those formats labelled separately when requesting an estimate. That makes it easier to explain a batch without assuming every small cassette is VHS-C.
Choose files around the way your family watches
Digital Plus Transfer says it can provide footage in .AVI, .MPEG4 or .MOV and ensure compatibility with a PC or Mac. Its general transfer information lists USB, hard drive, SD card or online storage. Decide on both the file format and the delivery medium; receiving a USB drive alone does not tell you which files will be on it.
Tell the provider whether your main destination is a television, a computer or an online family archive. Ask for the proposed file specifications and how separate recordings will be named or divided. If relatives use different devices, checking a sample file on those devices can be more useful than choosing solely by the format name.
Make a simple inventory with a unique number for each cassette, its label and any known date. Photograph handwritten labels before handover. Record uncertain dates as uncertain, and ask relatives about the people or occasions they recognize. Keep this information outside the video files too, so it stays available when filenames change.
Arrange handover with time to inspect the result
The website identifies its Toronto address as 85 Curlew Dr. Suite 102, corresponding to the North York listing here. It also says it serves customers Canada-wide and offers free return shipping Canada-wide for memories shipped in. Confirm the arrangements for your order before travelling or sending irreplaceable tapes, including packing instructions and how the originals will come back.
Most VHS transfers are advertised as completed in 3-5 days. Treat that as the published expectation for most transfers, then agree on a date for your batch, particularly if you are planning a family screening. Flag broken housings, loose tape or visible damage in advance and ask whether assessment or repair is possible.
Digital Plus Transfer says it retains a copy of a transfer for only 30 days before deleting it. That gives you a reason to check the delivered files promptly: match them against your inventory, play the beginning, middle and end, and listen for sound. Report missing footage or playback problems while a retained copy may still be available. Keep the original tapes and make a separate backup of the digital files.
A private archive after the transfer
Once the files are ready, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Digital Plus Transfer. You can invite relatives, organize albums and attach comments or stories that explain what a recording shows.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping the family find memories by year without inventing a precise day. For an unidentified summer holiday, an approximate year can be enough to put the recording alongside related photographs. Someone else may later recognize the trip and add the missing context.
Memrial includes 2.0 GB of free storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your converted file sizes before choosing what to upload. Keep a separate backup, and start with a few recordings your family will want to revisit rather than treating the archive as your only copy.
Turn a recording into a family occasion
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seeking, while voice and text chat let people discuss a familiar face or stop at a moment someone remembers. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.
For a reunion, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already collected. A new reunion album can sit alongside an older transferred recording, giving relatives a practical reason to add names and stories while everyone is thinking about the same occasion.
