The ten-tape starting point
The STANDARD video service starts at $249, has a 10 tape minimum and lists additional tapes at $25 each. It includes MP4 digital delivery, organized digital folders and a digital download. These are starting package terms, so request a written quote for the actual collection rather than treating the starting figure as a guaranteed final bill.
The minimum matters if you have only two or three recordings. Ask whether a smaller project can be accommodated before gathering tapes from relatives solely to reach a threshold. For a larger collection, send a count and identify the different tape types. Confirm any recording-length limits, taxes, delivery charges and additional work in the quote; the published STANDARD details do not resolve those points.
A collection can include more than video
Digital Time Capsule Studios also publishes separate STANDARD packages for audio cassettes and photographs. Cassette digitization starts at $149 with a 10 tape minimum and additional tapes at $15 each. It includes WAV or MP3 delivery, basic level adjustment, organized digital folders and a digital download. Those cassette prices are audio prices, separate from the video package.
The photo package starts at $199 with a 300 photo minimum and additional photos at $0.69 each. Its stated scope is photos up to 8x10, scanned at 600 DPI with JPEG delivery, organized folders and a digital download. If your collection mixes recordings and prints, ask for an itemized proposal. Separate package minimums should not be assumed to combine into one shared minimum.
Arrange the handover before moving originals
Mail-in digitization and archival preservation projects are accepted by prior arrangement. The studio explicitly asks customers to contact it before shipping media, photographs, film, tapes or archival materials. Agree on the destination, packing instructions and return arrangements first. The website provides a phone number and email for that conversation.
Prepare a simple inventory with a unique number for each tape, its label and anything you know about the recording. Photograph the labels and keep a copy of the inventory yourself. Mention a cracked case, loose tape, visible contamination or a previous playback problem before sending it. Ask whether damaged material can be assessed and what any repair would cost; do not try to play a suspect tape just to complete the inventory.
Decide what you need from the digital files
MP4 is the published STANDARD video output. Discuss how you intend to watch and share the recordings, and ask how filenames will correspond to your tape inventory. A numbered folder with an understandable label is much easier to navigate than a collection whose connection to the originals has been lost.
There is also a specific retention point for PRO ARCHIVAL projects: archival master files are retained for 30 days and may optionally be purchased before scheduled deletion. That statement applies to PRO ARCHIVAL, not automatically to STANDARD. If master files matter to you, clarify their cost and purchase deadline before booking.
When delivery arrives, check every expected file opens, sample the beginning, middle and end, and listen to the sound. Keep originals and at least one separate backup of the delivered files. A download is a delivery method, so make your own storage arrangements promptly.
Put names and dates back into the recordings
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes or form part of the studio service. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of the delivered files when deciding what to upload.
Invite relatives to help identify people, places and occasions. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it possible to find memories by year even when nobody remembers the precise day. A summer visit remembered only as being in the late nineties can still gain useful context. Albums, comments and stories let family members add what they know without changing the original recording.
Watch together, then collect the next occasion
Memrial Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat alongside playback. The free allowance is 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Pausing at a familiar face gives everyone time to contribute a name or a story.
For a new reunion or birthday, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. It is a practical way to place new family moments alongside the older recordings you have brought back into view.
