VHS alongside smaller camcorder tapes
The transfer list covers VHS Video Tapes, Hi 8 Tapes, Digital 8 Tapes, Micro MV and Mini DV Tapes. It also names cine film, 8mm film, media cards, USB and devices, and smartphones. That breadth is useful if a family collection contains recordings from several generations of cameras, but each format still needs to be identified correctly before you request a quote.
Read the labels on the cassette or case rather than guessing from its size. Make a short inventory with one number per item, its format and whatever the handwritten label says. A tape labelled "Summer holiday" may hold several different occasions, so preserve that wording without treating it as a complete contents list. Ask a relative who used the camera to help identify unfamiliar tapes.
Onsite tapes and specialist film are different routes
Foto Centre Plus states that all tapes are transferred onsite. Separately, it says specialist transfers such as cine film and 8mm film are outsourced to specialist companies. Those statements distinguish tape handling from film work; they do not establish that everything in a mixed collection follows the same route.
For a combined order, ask how the tapes and film will be recorded when received, who handles each part and how the originals will be returned. Keep a copy of your inventory and photograph the labels before handing anything over. If a cassette has a cracked shell, loose tape or signs of mould, describe the condition first. Ask whether it can be assessed and what any additional work would involve; do not try to play a visibly damaged tape simply to identify it.
Choosing a DVD with the next viewing in mind
The website says its DVDs use -R format, with +R discs available on request. This is a concrete output choice to discuss if you already have a DVD player. Check that player's instructions for supported disc types, and tell the business which type you need before the transfer begins.
For watching on a phone or adding a recording to an online family archive, ask whether a separate video file can be supplied, in which format and by what method. The published mention of USB and devices is part of the media list, so it should not be treated as a promise of USB delivery. Establish the full price, any tax or additional charges, expected completion date and whether the originals are included in the return arrangements when agreeing the order.
Check the recording while the labels still make sense
Once a transfer is returned, watch the beginning, a few points in the middle and the end of each recording. Listen as well as look: family conversations, music and background voices may be as valuable as the picture. Compare the result with your inventory and note any gaps or playback problems to raise with the converter.
For files, use clear names that connect back to the original cassette number. Keep the tapes and at least two copies of the digital recordings in separate places. A relative may recognise an unnamed person or place later, so leave room to improve descriptions without losing the original label. Agree which recordings are suitable to share before inviting a wider family group.
From converted video to a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not digitise tapes and is not part of Fotocentreplus. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across an archive, with no card needed. Check your video file sizes against that allowance before choosing what to upload.
Invite relatives to help put names and stories to photos and home videos. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping people find a memory by year even when nobody remembers the precise day. A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat. Relatives nearby or far away can watch together; the free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants.
Let a reunion add another chapter
An old recording can be a good starting point for a family reunion. Memrial's Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link so guests can add their own photos and videos to the event album. Contributors sign in, but they do not need archive membership. Closing the link keeps the memories already collected, letting you finish gathering contributions when the occasion is over.
