Budget by tape format before arranging the order
The published VHS and VHS-C price is $20 per tape. Hi8, Video8 and MiniDV are listed at $25 per tape. Count each format separately when making your inventory so that your initial budget reflects the actual mix. These are tape prices; they do not explain every possible charge or tax condition. Ask for the total for your particular order, including the delivery method and any work needed on tapes in poor condition.
Use a simple numbered list with the format, the label on the cassette and anything you remember about its contents. A recording marked “birthday” might cover more than one celebration, so avoid treating its handwritten title as a complete description. Ask a relative to help identify unlabeled tapes before you send them, while keeping guesses distinct from confirmed details.
MP4 delivery and what 1080p means for old recordings
Good Memory Media lists 1080p MP4 digital files for its VHS transfer service. Cloud download is included, and USB delivery is available. The website also describes correction and restoration when needed. Discuss a visibly damaged cassette or a recording with playback problems before placing the order; that wording does not establish that every fault can be repaired.
A 1080p file describes the delivered image dimensions, rather than proving that an old VHS recording contains modern high-definition detail. For everyday viewing, think about the devices your family will use and whether you prefer downloading the files or receiving a USB. Confirm the USB cost and capacity for the tape order, plus how long any download will remain available. The published tape details do not settle those questions.
Mail-in access and a realistic deadline
The tape service accepts mailed tapes from anywhere in the U.S. Local pickup may also be available depending on location. Austin appears on the website, but arrange the handover directly instead of assuming a walk-in address or pickup boundary. Before shipping, request the correct destination, packaging guidance and arrangements for returning the originals.
Most VHS and camcorder tape orders are described as taking 3-7 business days. Larger orders may take longer depending on tape quantity and condition. If the recordings are needed for a reunion, allow separately for shipping and your own time to download and check them. Keep a copy of your numbered inventory and photograph the cassette labels before packing; this gives you a reference when matching returned files to the recordings.
Keep film reels separate from camcorder tapes
Good Memory Media also converts 8mm and Super 8 film to MP4, describing careful handling, cleaning and light correction. Those are film reels, distinct from Video8 and Hi8 cassettes. If both appear in your collection, make separate groups and describe them clearly when asking for a quote. The business also publishes cassette audio transfer at $15 per tape and slide scanning options, so other family material may be worth discussing alongside the videos.
Avoid carrying a price or delivery condition from one medium into another. For example, film reels and video cassettes require different work even when the resulting files will belong to the same family collection. Send a description of uncertain items rather than forcing them into a familiar category.
Review the files before building the family archive
After delivery, open every video and sample its beginning, middle and ending. Listen as well as watch, check that the names correspond to your inventory, and note any unexpected gaps for discussion with the converter. Keep the physical originals and a separate backup of the digital files. A USB used for viewing should not be your only copy.
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion; it does not convert tapes or form part of Good Memory Media. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. You can invite relatives, arrange photos and home videos in albums, and add comments and stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping everyone find memories by year even when a cassette label only says “a summer holiday”.
For a family catch-up, Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video with host play, pause and seek controls, plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours monthly and up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure contribution link: contributors sign in but need no archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already gathered.
