A tape collection with more than one format
The consumer formats listed by Horizon Media Express cover VHS alongside VHS-C, Mini DV and 8 mm tape. Read the labels before counting your collection: 8 mm tape is different from 8mm movie film. The company separately advertises 8mm and 16mm film transfer, so reels and cassettes should be described separately when requesting a quote.
Its professional tape transfer page also lists Beta SP, DigiBeta, DVCAM, DVCPRO, HD MiniDV, U-Matic and D-2. If an unfamiliar cassette turns up among family recordings, photograph its label and ask which service applies. That is more reliable than assuming every object shaped like a tape belongs under the consumer price list.
Understand the price before combining an order
The consumer tape page publishes $35.00 for up to 2 hours, for either or both a digital file and DVD. It also lists quantity rates of $18.00 per tape for 2-10 tapes, $17.00 per tape for 11-20 tapes and $16.00 per tape for 21-30 tapes. These figures make the number of tapes worth discussing before you submit an order.
Ask how the quantity rates relate to the two-hour allowance and your chosen output, especially if some tapes run longer or the order mixes formats. Confirm the total, any applicable tax or additional charges, and the expected completion date. Professional tape transfer has a separate instruction to call for further pricing; the consumer figures should not be carried across to those formats.
Plan the handover around in-house conversion
Horizon Media Express says trained technicians carry out transfers and conversions in its Winter Park facility without shipping them out. Its published hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, with Saturday and Sunday closed. Before making a trip, confirm how the business accepts an order and whether your project needs an appointment.
Create a short inventory with one number per tape and copy the existing labels without guessing missing dates. Note visible damage, a broken case or a recording that previously played badly. Ask whether those tapes can be assessed and whether any repair would cost extra. Keep this inventory so you can match each returned recording to its original cassette.
Choose an output you can keep using
Because the consumer service advertises a digital file, DVD or both, think about the people who will watch the result. A relative may still prefer a disc, while a file is useful for making backups and organizing recordings on a computer. Ask for the exact video file type, delivery method and storage requirements before deciding. The MP3 and WAV options on the professional page refer to Digital Audio Tapes, not VHS video.
When the order returns, check the beginning, middle and end of each recording, including the sound. Match the files to your inventory and retain the originals. Save a separate backup before renaming or editing anything. If you want a shorter viewing copy, keep the complete transfer too, since an apparently ordinary conversation may become meaningful later.
Bring photographs into the same family story
Horizon Media Express also advertises photo scanning for 35mm slides, photo strips and photographs of any size, as well as audio cassette conversion with a free estimate available by phone. A holiday video might therefore prompt a separate enquiry about related photographs or an audio recording, rather than treating the tapes as the whole collection.
Invite relatives to help identify faces, places and approximate years while you organize the digital results. Memrial is a separate private family archive for photos and home videos after conversion; it does not convert physical tapes or form part of Horizon Media Express. Its Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help find memories by year. The free archive includes 2.0 GB of shared storage with no card needed. Keep an independent backup as well.
Watch a recording together, then add today's memories
A converted birthday recording can become a reason to gather relatives again. Memrial Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives using voice or text chat nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants.
For a new family birthday, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. This gives older recordings and new contributions a place in the same private archive, with relatives adding the context only they remember.
