Match each cassette to the right transfer
The VHS, VHS-C and SVHS transfer listing shows a price range of £8.00 through £13.00. The separate MiniDV, HD MiniDV and MicroMV service shows the same range, as does the Digital8, Video8 and Hi8 cassette service. Betamax transfer is listed at £8.00. These are distinct services, useful when different generations of cameras have left a family with several cassette shapes.
Copy the format printed on each cassette into a simple inventory rather than guessing from its size. Add any handwritten title, an approximate recording date and whether you know the tape contains more than one occasion. Ask which option in the published range applies to your recordings, what recording length it covers and whether the final quote includes any applicable tax or extra work. The range alone does not answer those questions.
Decide what you need from the MP4 download
For VHS transfers, iPhotoscan describes MP4 as the standard downloadable format, playable on a computer or mobile device; other formats are available on request. Its MiniDV and Betamax pages also describe MP4 downloads. The Digital8, Video8 and Hi8 page names AVI, MOV and WMV as examples of alternatives you can request in an order comment.
For ordinary family viewing, start by considering the devices people actually use. If you plan to edit a wedding recording, ask about the file specifications your editing software needs before placing the order. Also ask how separate recordings will be named or divided. A download and a disc are different deliverables, so state clearly if you need a physical copy as well.
Prepare the handover without experimenting on fragile tapes
Photograph cassette labels and number the cases to match your inventory. Note anything you have already observed, such as a broken shell, visible mould or playback trouble. Ask whether damaged tapes can be assessed and what any proposed repair would involve; do not assume conversion includes restoration. Avoid testing a suspect cassette repeatedly in an old player.
The VHS page says originals are returned by a signed for courier service included in the price. Arrange how you will send or hand over the collection and confirm the expected completion date before committing to a family screening. Keep your inventory until the originals return, then check every cassette against it.
Use the 90-day backup period to check and save your files
iPhotoscan says VHS video files are backed up for 90 days on a secure server, with a download link provided as soon as the order is processed. Treat that period as time to collect and check your recordings, rather than your permanent storage arrangement. Download promptly and keep another copy on a separate drive or other suitable backup destination.
Open every file, check the beginning and end, and sample points in between for picture and sound. Compare the content with any notes on the cassette, particularly where a tape holds several events. Keep the original tapes after conversion. A relative may recognise an unexpected voice or remember an occasion differently, and the recording can help resolve the details.
Build a dated family collection after conversion
Once the downloads are safely stored, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is separate from iPhotoscan. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check file sizes before deciding which recordings to upload first.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories, and give recordings exact or approximate dates in Timeline so they can be found by year. A holiday labelled only with a destination might become much easier to place when a sibling remembers their school year. Keep uncertainty visible instead of assigning a precise date that nobody can support.
Make an old recording part of a new family occasion
Memrial's Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seeking, with voice and text chat alongside playback. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Pausing a birthday recording gives everyone time to identify faces or explain a joke.
For a present-day birthday or reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. That can bring a newly converted childhood recording together with pictures from the gathering it inspired.
