Three cassette formats with published prices
Legacy Scanning publishes $10.00 each for VHS, $10.00 each for VHS-C and $10.00 each for Hi8 video cassettes. These are format-specific prices, so the VHS service is supported by the published evidence. The quoted entries do not explain recording-length limits, taxes or additional charges. Ask for a total based on your actual collection before treating the listed amount as the final bill.
Keep VHS-C separate from full-size VHS when making your inventory. Likewise, copy the wording on small camcorder cassettes instead of assuming every compact tape is Hi8. A photograph of an unfamiliar cassette can make an initial enquiry more useful. Ask whether any other formats in your collection are accepted, and describe broken cases, loose tape or visible contamination before arranging transfer. Do not try playing a visibly damaged cassette simply to identify its contents.
Film reels and photographs need their own estimate
For 8mm and Super 8mm film, the published prices are $10.00 each for a 3-inch reel, $15.00 each for a 5-inch reel and $20.00 each for a 7-inch reel. Individual photos are listed at $0.15 each and scrapbook pages at $0.40 per page. Transparency slides have a published price of $0.25 each, while the workflow page says negatives or slides are handled by request. Confirm the arrangements for those materials when discussing the job.
A mixed collection benefits from a simple count by category. Keep film reels with their labeled containers, and preserve the order of album or scrapbook pages. If a caption names people or places, include that information in your inventory. Ask how captions, page layouts and any writing on photograph backs can be captured; those details may explain a memory more clearly than the image alone.
Arrange the handover before packing
The website describes Twin Cities service and nationwide mail-in. Its local instructions say to schedule a drop-off or pickup, with coordinated pickup or delivery afterward. Mail-in customers are told to pack carefully, include their information and ship with tracking; originals are shipped back with tracking. Arrange the handover directly rather than assuming the listing address is an open counter.
Before anything leaves your possession, number the items and keep a matching list. Use removable labels on cases, without covering existing handwriting. For shipping, protect items from movement inside a sturdy box and retain your inventory and tracking details. Agree on the return arrangements, including who pays shipping, as the sourced instructions do not establish those costs.
Choose delivery you can check and keep
Legacy Scanning says digitized memories are delivered via USB or a Google Drive link. Ask which file types you will receive, how files will be named and whether the delivery choice changes the quote. Its workflow page gives a typical completion time of 1-2 weeks alongside photo-scanning information. Confirm a schedule specifically for your tapes or mixed-format project.
After delivery, open every file and compare it with your inventory. Sample the beginning, middle and end of videos, check that sound plays and note unexpected gaps. Download linked files to storage you control. Keep the physical originals and a separate digital backup. The provider states that a private backup is stored onsite after delivery unless requested otherwise; ask about its retention period and how to request removal.
Let relatives help put dates to the recordings
Once conversion is complete, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Legacy Scanning. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check file sizes before deciding which memories to upload first.
Invite relatives to help identify a graduation, a holiday or a familiar kitchen in the footage. Memrial's Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording with an estimated date can still be found by year. Comments and stories give family members somewhere to add names and context while the details are fresh.
Watch together, then collect the next family occasion
Memrial Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives near or far. The host controls play, pause and seeking, with voice and text chat alongside playback. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. Watching an old birthday together can make it easier to identify people and remember what happened just outside the camera's view.
For a new reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. It is a practical way to bring the reunion's new pictures together after revisiting the older recordings.
