One enquiry for VHS and the smaller camera tapes
The transfer list names VHS, Video8, Hi8, Digital 8, VHSc, DV, Mini DV, HDV and Betamax, as well as camcorder recordings generally. Super 8 and 8mm cine film also appear on the main conversion page. Littler's says it serves the wider Warrington area.
Before making contact, group the recordings by the format printed on their cases. Give each one a short identifying number and photograph any handwritten label. If the contents are uncertain, say so instead of guessing. A list such as "three VHS tapes and four Hi8 tapes, dates unknown" provides a useful starting point for an enquiry. Ask separately about damaged shells, mould or snapped tape; the published format list does not establish a restoration service.
Settle the output and the price together
The main conversion page advertises £25 per tape to DVD or £30 per tape to USB and DVD together, with the USB itself included. It also includes a 28 day cloud link for the files. A second conversion page gives £15 per tape to DVD or £20 per tape to USB, again including the USB. These are different published offers, so obtain confirmation of the applicable package before calculating the cost of a whole collection.
The second page also advertises bulk-transfer and repeat-customer discounts, plus extra DVDs at £10 each and an extra USB at £15.00. Ask what qualifies for a discount and whether any duration limit, additional work or tax treatment affects your quote. No discount amount or tape-duration allowance is stated in these details.
For everyday viewing, think about the equipment your relatives actually use. A DVD may suit someone with a working player, while digital files can be copied to backup storage and added to a family archive. Confirm the file format and whether each tape arrives as a separate file. The cloud link is temporary access, so arrange to download the files within its 28 day window.
Choose a handover that keeps the collection organised
Littler's says you can drop tapes in and receive a call or email when they are ready to collect. Its main conversion page also offers collection and return in person or by post. Agree the arrangements and any associated cost directly, especially if you are relying on collection from your home.
For the handover, keep your numbered inventory with a count of the tapes and the output you have agreed. Ask for an expected completion date and how the originals will come back. Retain their labels and cases, and avoid trying to play visibly damaged tapes simply to identify them. Those are preparation suggestions, rather than instructions issued by the provider.
Check the return before putting the originals away
Once you receive the files, open every recording and sample its beginning, middle and end. Check that sound is present, the picture plays and the labels match the contents. Make a note of anything unexpected so you can describe it clearly when asking about the result.
Keep the tapes after conversion and create a second digital copy on separate storage. Ask a relative to help identify people and occasions while those details are still easy to recall.
Turn the files into memories relatives can find
Memrial is a separate private family archive for the digital memories after conversion. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Littler's transfer service. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Invite relatives, arrange photos and home videos into albums, and add comments or stories that explain what is happening.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping you find memories by year even when nobody remembers the precise day. For a family anniversary, a Live Watch Party can synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat alongside the recording. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
Event Memories can also collect new anniversary photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their uploads go into the event album. Closing the link retains the collected memories, so the celebration can sit alongside the older recordings.
