One collection can contain several tape types
The tape service lists VHS, VHS-C, Video 8, Hi8, Mini DV and Betamax. Its wider conversion list also includes Digital8, DVD, MiniDVD, CD, physical photos and photo albums. That range is useful if the family collection changed with successive cameras: the small cassette from a camcorder and the larger VHS recording may both belong to the same birthday or vacation.
Start by separating the media into formats and giving each item a simple reference number. Photograph the labels before handing anything over, and keep a list of what each label says. Where a label is uncertain, record that uncertainty. Ask Lotus 7 about any damaged shell, loose tape or visible contamination before attempting playback; the format list alone does not establish which repairs are available.
Budget by tape, then settle the handover details
Lotus 7 publishes a tape price of $20 per tape. Before agreeing to an order, ask whether that figure covers your cassette lengths and what taxes or additional charges apply. Its website also advertises one free tape transfer if it receives your tapes within three days of your completing the form. Confirm the offer and the qualifying delivery arrangements when booking.
Free pickup is advertised for orders of 10 or more tapes. The website names Plantation, Davie, North Miami and Aventura as drop-off areas; those names do not establish every pickup address or a coverage boundary. A written inventory makes either arrangement easier to follow. Ask the person receiving the tapes to confirm the number of items and your contact details.
Published transfer estimates are approximately one week for up to 10 tapes and approximately two weeks for up to 20 tapes, with a custom estimate for much larger orders at drop-off. Treat these as estimates and agree on timing for your particular batch, especially if you hope to show a recording at an upcoming gathering.
Plan for Google Drive delivery before the files arrive
The provider says it sends digital files through private Google Drive, organized by year, with options to download to a PC, watch on a phone or cast to a living room TV. If the labels contain dates, pass those details along. For undated recordings, a broad estimate such as a school year is more useful than a confident but incorrect date.
Ask which file type and resolution you will receive, how separate recordings are named and how long the delivery link remains available. Those details matter when choosing where to keep the results and how to play them. Once delivered, download the files and check that each inventory item has a corresponding recording. Sample the beginning, middle and end, listen to the audio and try playback on the device you expect to use.
Collect the originals within the stated deadline
Lotus 7 says you can pick up all original physical tapes after the digital transfers are complete. Its collection deadline is 60 days from project completion, and it states that media abandoned beyond that period will be discarded because storage space is limited. Put the collection date in your calendar when completion is confirmed.
Keep the returned originals labeled and together, even after you have checked the files. Maintain a separate backup of the downloads, ideally on another storage device or in another location. A delivery folder, a viewing copy and an independent backup serve different purposes. Ask relatives to help identify people or occasions in the recordings, but keep the original filename or inventory reference so their notes remain attached to the right video.
Turn the downloads into a private family collection
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is separate from Lotus 7. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your video sizes when deciding what to upload, and retain your independent backups.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping relatives find memories by year even when nobody remembers the precise day. You could group a summer trip into an album, invite relatives and use comments and stories to identify the people in it. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video using host play, pause and seek controls, with voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties include three hours per month and up to six participants.
For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. That lets a converted family recording sit alongside the new photographs from the occasion it helped bring together.
