A tape count helps make sense of the published price
Lucid Reverie publishes a charge of $40/tape to capture and convert to MP4. It also says bulk rates apply for more than 10 tapes, with further information available by contacting the business. If your collection crosses that threshold, ask for a quote for the whole batch before deciding which recordings to leave out. The published wording gives a useful baseline, but does not specify the bulk discount, tax treatment, additional fees or any tape-duration limit.
Make your inventory by physical cassette, with a short description beside each one. A label such as a family Christmas may identify the subject without telling you how much recording is actually on the tape. Ask how blank tapes, partly recorded tapes and unusually long recordings are handled, and confirm the current total before handing anything over. This avoids building a budget around assumptions the price statement does not answer.
Check the small cassettes alongside your VHS collection
VHS is not the only format named on Lucid Reverie's tape digitization page. The list also includes 8mm, Hi8, Video8, Digital8 and miniDV. That is helpful if a family's recording habits changed from a living-room VCR to a compact camcorder. The listed 8mm format belongs to this video-tape service; it should not be taken as a promise to scan 8mm movie film.
Read the markings on each cassette and keep its original case if you have it. If a format is unclear, describe the label or send a photograph when making your inquiry. Avoid forcing a tape into a player to identify it. For a cassette with a cracked shell, a loose ribbon or visible contamination, ask whether the business can assess it and whether any repair work would be needed. Format support alone does not establish a damaged-tape restoration service.
MP4 delivery and the drive you bring
The published $40/tape service names MP4 as the conversion output. Lucid Reverie also says it can provide any digital format you need, and that files can be placed on a USB drive or portable hard drive you supply. If you want a different format for editing or a particular playback device, describe that purpose and ask for the relevant specification and price. The statement about other formats does not establish that every alternative is included in the MP4 charge.
Before buying or bringing a drive, ask how much space your batch is likely to need and how the drive should be prepared. Decide on a simple naming scheme that connects each file to its original cassette. For example, an inventory number followed by the subject lets you match a digital recording with its physical source even when the date is uncertain. Keep that inventory with your finished files.
Arrange the handover, then check the recordings
Lucid Reverie's website gives a Juneau address at 175 S. Franklin St #312, along with a telephone number and email contact. Use those contact details to arrange the handover and ask about the current schedule. The published tape information does not establish a completion time, so mention any reunion or anniversary deadline when requesting a quote.
Once the files are returned, open every one and check the beginning, a few points in the middle and the end. Listen as well as watch, and compare the contents with your inventory. Keep the original cassettes while you resolve any questions. Save a second digital copy on a separate drive or other backup destination before sharing the only working copy with relatives.
Let relatives help identify what you have saved
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Lucid Reverie's service. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose the videos and photos that fit that allowance rather than assuming a full tape collection will fit. Invite relatives to add comments, names and stories, and use Timeline to assign exact or approximate dates so memories can be found by year.
For a family anniversary, a Live Watch Party can bring relatives nearby or far away into the same uploaded home video. The host controls play, pause and seek, with synchronized playback and voice or text chat. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories can also collect photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; uploads go to the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories already collected.
