Four tape formats, with DVD as the named destination
The transfer page names VHS, Hi-8, DV and mini VHS tapes. That is useful if your recordings came from different cameras over the years: list each format separately when making an enquiry, rather than describing everything as VHS. If you are unsure of a format, a photograph of the label can help frame the conversation.
DVD is the output explicitly advertised by MSM Digital Transfers. If your aim is to upload a recording or send copies to relatives, ask whether a digital video file is available as part of the order or as an additional service. Confirm how you would receive that file and which devices it should play on. Those details matter before you commit to an output that might require another conversion later.
Understanding the £8 per started hour price
The published tape transfer rate is £8 per started hour of footage. Keep the words "started hour" in mind when requesting a quote: a recording that extends into another hour may fall into a further billing unit. Ask how the provider applies that unit across several tapes and whether the charge follows recorded footage or includes blank sections. Do not estimate a final bill from the number of cassettes alone.
Before handing anything over, request an itemised total covering your chosen output and any extra copies or delivery arrangements. The published rate does not establish those costs or tax treatment. Also agree a completion estimate directly. Keep a written note of the tapes, requested output and agreed price.
Make a small, useful inventory before the handover
Start with the recordings that would be hardest to replace. Number each cassette and record whatever you know: a birthday, a school performance, a holiday or simply an approximate decade. Avoid rewriting an original label that may contain clues somebody else recognises.
Look for cracked cases, loose tape or visible mould without opening the cassette or trying a repair. Tell the provider about any concerns and ask whether it can assess or handle that condition. Leave a questionable tape unplayed until you have advice. Arrange the return of the originals alongside the converted copies, and keep your inventory so you can match each result to its cassette.
The slide service may help complete the same family story
MSM Digital Transfers also publishes a 35mm slide page, with a "Scan and deep clean" price of 60p each. This is a separate scanning figure, not a tape transfer price. If slides and home videos cover the same occasion, it may be useful to enquire about both, while keeping the counts and quotations separate.
Ask what the slide cleaning involves and how scans would be supplied before choosing that option. Relatives may be able to identify a place from a slide that also appears in a recording. Their notes can help explain the finished collection.
Check playback before putting the originals away
When your copies arrive, check the beginning, a middle section and the ending of each recording. Listen as well as watch, especially where speech matters. Compare the titles or filenames against your inventory and note any unexpected gaps. If something looks wrong, describe the tape number and the point in the recording when asking for help.
Keep the originals and make an independent backup of any digital files. A disc or a single computer should not be the only place the converted recording survives. Test your backup by opening a file from it, then store it separately from your everyday copy.
Bring relatives into the recordings after conversion
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos after conversion. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of MSM Digital Transfers. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across an archive, with no card needed. Check file sizes when deciding which recordings to upload.
Timeline lets you add exact or approximate dates so relatives can find memories by year. A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while everyone uses voice or text chat. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants.
For an anniversary, Event Memories can collect contributions through a secure occasion link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already collected. That gives relatives a way to add their own view of the occasion.
