Separate the camcorder cassettes from the cine reels
The business also transfers Standard 8, Super 8 and 16mm cine film to DVD and MP4 files on USB. That makes it relevant to a collection containing both small video cassettes and older film reels, although these are different media and should be described separately when requesting a quote.
Give each item a simple number and make a short list of the wording on its label. An 8mm video cassette and an 8mm cine reel should never become one entry just because they share a measurement. Ask relatives what they recognise before handing anything over: a pencilled place name or a camera owner's initials may be the best clue to an otherwise unidentified recording.
Choose USB files around the way your family watches
Mark Stuart Media's video service provides MP4 files on USB. DVD discs can be supplied instead of, or alongside, a USB stick for a set-top DVD player or a computer with a DVD drive. Think about the equipment people actually use. Files are convenient for making backup copies and organising an archive; a disc may suit someone who already watches everything through a familiar DVD player.
The published USB supply charge is a one-off £10 per job lot or batch of tapes, with capacity increased at no extra charge so all files fit on one stick. Additional sticks containing all files are £10 each. The separate DVD plus USB option is listed as an extra £10 per tape. These are different charging descriptions, so have the complete combination priced for your batch before agreeing to it, including any applicable tax.
Ask whether your television supports the delivered files rather than relying on its USB socket alone. Keep the transfer files as your master copies even if you later make shorter versions to share.
Flag overseas recordings and tape damage early
American NTSC tape playback or conversion to British PAL is listed at £5 per tape. If a relative recorded footage abroad, include that detail in your enquiry so the format can be checked before work begins.
Tape repair is listed at £25 per tape for snapped tapes, breaks during transfer or tapes stuck in a camera, provided they are repairable without excessive mould. Ask about the particular damage rather than assuming a successful repair. Avoid opening a cassette or repeatedly trying to play one that jams.
Editing is quoted on application, with a published figure of £20+ per tape. Instructions and timings can be supplied at drop-off or after the initial transfer and viewing. Watching the transfer first can help you choose exact cuts while preserving a complete copy of the original recording.
Arrange the Aberdeen handover before travelling
The video-transfer page describes a studio in a house with no set opening hours and asks customers to arrange an appointment before travelling. Tapes are transferred on the premises. Send your numbered list and explain any deadline when arranging the handover, then agree how the originals and finished copies will be collected.
When you receive the files, match them to your list and check a passage near the start, middle and end of each recording, including the sound. Record any unexpected gaps or playback problems clearly. Keep the original tapes and store another digital copy separately from the supplied USB stick; one small device should not be the only place the recording survives.
Turn the transferred recordings into a dated family archive
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert physical tapes and is separate from Mark Stuart Media. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose which recordings to upload within that allowance while keeping your own backup copies.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories, then use Timeline to place memories by exact or approximate dates and find them by year. If nobody remembers the day of a beach holiday, an approximate year is still useful. A relative recognising a school uniform or an old car may help narrow it down later.
Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining through voice and text chat, nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. For an anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but need not be archive members; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps those memories.
