Separate the VHS pile from the other formats
The tape-transfer page names VHS, VHS-C, Digital 8, HDV, DV, mini DV and DVCam. Its Beta service is specifically limited to BetaSP. The broader service list also includes film, slides, records and audio cassettes, which may be useful if your family collection combines moving pictures with photographs and recordings.
However, the everyday $10 special has a narrower scope: VHS, VHS-C and Digital 8mm, at any tape length, for the first 20 eligible video tapes in an order. The offer excludes film, slides, records, audio cassettes, micro cassettes, DV, BetaSP and MiniDisc. Count formats separately instead of assuming every item in the collection qualifies. Photographing unfamiliar labels is a sensible way to make an initial enquiry more precise.
Use the published price as a starting point
The pricing page describes $10 per tape to an MP4 file for up to 20 tapes, with bulk pricing available beyond 20. The home page likewise says bulk pricing applies at 21 tapes or more. For a larger order, ask how the bulk calculation works and request a total covering the formats you actually have. The published figures do not establish taxes, shipping charges or other possible costs.
Disc output is described separately at $10 per DVD. Depending on the length of the transferred material, multiple items may fit on one disc. Media Transfer MN asks customers to identify which items they want together and says it will contact them if fitting those items onto one DVD is not possible. Decide whether a disc serves a relative's needs before adding it to your order.
Plan around files you can actually use
Media Transfer MN states that tape transfers are captured to MP4 files. A file-based result is useful if you want to organize recordings by occasion, make backup copies or eventually share selected videos in a private family archive. Ask how files are delivered, how they are named and whether you need to provide storage. The published MP4 description alone does not answer those practical questions.
Choose one representative tape for discussing your expectations, especially if recordings vary in condition. Tell the provider about a cracked shell, loose tape, visible contamination or playback trouble before sending anything. Ask whether it can assess that particular problem and what any extra work would cost. Keep original labels intact and use a separate numbered inventory rather than opening or attempting to repair a cassette yourself.
Arrange the handoff before packing
The contact page labels 855 Village Center Drive, #169, North Oaks, MN 55127 as a shipping address. That description should not be treated as a promise of walk-in service. The website says texting is OK at 612-888-1223 and describes email as the fastest response method. Use that first conversation to confirm the current process, expected completion time and return arrangements.
Keep a copy of your inventory and photograph the tapes before packing. Ask relatives which recordings matter most, then mark priorities on your list: an elderly relative's voice or an otherwise undocumented anniversary may deserve attention first. If you only know an approximate year, record that uncertainty rather than inventing an exact date.
Check the transfers, then bring relatives into the story
When files arrive, compare them with your inventory and sample the beginning, middle and end of each recording. Check for expected sound and recognizable scenes. Raise any missing material or playback problems promptly. Keep the physical originals and a separate backup of the digital files before reorganizing your working copies.
Memrial is a separate private family archive for memories after conversion; it does not convert tapes or form part of Media Transfer MN. Its free archive includes 2.0 GB of shared storage with no card needed. Invite relatives, arrange photos and home videos in albums, and add comments or stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping you find a recording by year even when relatives can only narrow its date down to a particular summer.
A Live Watch Party synchronizes an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice or text chat. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For an anniversary gathering, Event Memories offers a secure contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, and their photos and videos enter the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories.
