Quantity helps explain the VHS starting price
MEDIAFIX's VHS price list quotes starting prices per tape: from £10.99 for up to three tapes, £9.99 for four to ten, £8.99 for eleven to twenty-five, £6.99 for twenty-six to fifty, and £5.99 for fifty-one or more. Its VHS-C page publishes the same quantity bands and starting figures. The lowest advertised figure therefore belongs to a large batch, rather than a single cassette.
The camcorder price table adds another distinction. Budget PAL video DVD conversion includes VHS and VHS-C, while Standard PAL MP4 and Premium Full HD MP4 have separate prices. For up to three tapes, those tables show £10.99, £13.99 and £19.99 respectively. Ask for a quotation that identifies your output choice, tape count, any extras and the tax treatment. A starting price alone is not the final cost of your particular order.
Separate the cassettes before comparing options
A mixed collection needs a little more care. MEDIAFIX lists VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi8, Video8 and Digital8 within its Budget DVD table. S-VHS and S-VHS-C also appear in the Standard and Premium MP4 tables. Betamax, Betacam SP and other types have a separate special-format price category. Its S-VHS page starts at £13.99 per tape for up to three, so the ordinary VHS headline should not be applied to every cassette.
Before requesting a quote, read the format markings and give each tape a simple reference number. Photograph the labels and note any uncertain descriptions, such as 'holiday, date uncertain'. Ask relatives which recordings matter most if you need to prioritise a smaller first batch. If a shell is broken or the tape looks mouldy, describe it to the provider and ask whether it can be assessed. Avoid opening or testing a suspect cassette yourself.
Choose the copy you will actually use
MEDIAFIX's VHS page names DVD, USB and direct download as delivery options, and describes MP4 files as another choice after a non-binding request. Its camcorder table separates DVD from MP4 service levels. Have the provider confirm the exact combination included in your quotation, particularly if you want both a disc and files.
For a household that still watches discs, DVD may suit the immediate viewing habit. For uploading, organising and keeping additional copies, ask for usable digital files and check compatibility with your intended devices. Do not choose a Full HD-labelled option solely because the number sounds better: ask what processing is involved and how it will affect your original recording. Specify whether you want complete tapes preserved before considering shorter clips for sharing.
Confirm the destination, then check the return
MEDIAFIX says media can be sent by post or your preferred delivery service, and that original VHS cassettes are returned by post alongside the converted material. Its website publishes a logistics centre at Precision Imaging, Unit 2, Clonmel Road Business Park, Stirchley, B30 2BU. Our listing reflects that published address. Confirm the current destination and any drop-off arrangement directly before dispatch.
Keep your numbered inventory and pack tapes so their cases cannot move freely. On return, match the originals and files against that list. Play the beginning, middle and end of each file, checking sound as well as picture. Raise missing sections or unreadable files promptly. Keep the tapes, preserve an untouched digital copy and make a backup in a separate location before editing anything.
Let relatives put names and dates to the footage
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is not part of MEDIAFIX. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your video sizes when deciding which recordings to add first.
Invite relatives to help identify the people and places on screen. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find memories by year even when a cassette label is incomplete. For a family anniversary, a Live Watch Party can synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seeking, with voice and text chat alongside it. Free Watch Parties allow three hours per month and six participants.
Event Memories can also gather photos and videos from that anniversary through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their uploads collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed, leaving the old footage and the new occasion together.
