A collection that crosses several tape formats
Memory Converter lists VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, Betamax, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV among its accepted formats. Its broader list includes professional video tapes, 8mm and Super 8 film, photos, slides, negatives, audio recordings and home-recorded discs. If you cannot identify an item, the website invites you to send a photo so the business can identify it.
That range is helpful when a family used several cameras over the years. Before requesting a quote, separate tapes from film reels, photographs and audio cassettes. Give each item a simple reference number and copy any handwritten label into an inventory. Keep uncertain descriptions tentative: a label saying Christmas may identify the occasion without establishing the year. Ask relatives to help identify faces and places, while keeping their guesses separate from confirmed information.
Read the $18 tape price with its service description
The VHS service page lists VHS, VHS-C and S-VHS at $18 per tape for hand transfer, cleaning and standard MP4 output. A separate camcorder service lists VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, HDV and DVCAM at $18 per tape, cleaned and captured on native decks. For U-matic, Betacam SP and Digital Betacam, the published price is $28 per tape, with transfer on calibrated studio decks.
Use those figures to describe your collection when seeking an itemized quote. Ask how recording length, blank tapes, any additional delivery media and tax affect the final total; the quoted price descriptions do not settle those questions. Flag cracked cases, loose tape or visible mold before packing anything. Ask what assessment is possible and whether a damaged item would need additional work. Cleaning in a service description should not be taken as a promise that every damaged recording can be recovered.
Hollywood drop-off or a mail-in route
The website identifies a studio at 6630 Meade Street in Hollywood and says drop-offs do not need an appointment. It also offers scheduled local pickup and a free prepaid, insured mail-in kit from anywhere in the U.S. The business describes its reach as South Florida and nationwide by mail. Check current opening hours before traveling and arrange pickup details directly.
For camcorder tape orders, Memory Converter says most are completed within 3-5 business days, with rush service potentially available for smaller orders. That statement concerns camcorder orders; it does not establish a deadline for every VHS collection or mixed-media project. If you are preparing a birthday screening, explain the date and ask for an estimate covering your actual items and delivery method. Photograph your inventory before handover so you have a clear record of what went in.
Choose files you can check and keep
Memory Converter describes MP4 video, uncompressed WAV audio and JPEG/TIFF image scans, delivered through a private cloud gallery, USB flash drive or custom DVD. These file types belong to different media: a VHS transfer produces video, while the audio and image formats relate to those other services. Ask which delivery choices and costs apply to your order, especially if you want both convenient viewing and a separate backup.
The VHS page says every original tape is returned with the completed digital files. Keep those originals after conversion. When the files arrive, compare them with your inventory, check the opening and ending, and sample sections throughout each recording for sound and picture. Note any unexpected gaps before renaming files. Save a second copy in a separate place, and keep a simple list connecting each digital filename to its original tape number.
From transferred tapes to a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Memory Converter. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed. Check the size of your finished videos before deciding which memories to upload first; the allowance is shared, not unlimited.
Timeline lets you add exact or approximate dates so relatives can find memories by year. A recording labeled summer at Grandma’s can sit under an approximate year until someone recognizes a detail. Comments and stories can then add context that the original tape label never captured.
For a family birthday, a Live Watch Party can synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives near or far. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat alongside playback. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories can collect new birthday photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership, uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
