VHS, camcorder tapes and the labels that matter
Milestone Media lists VHS, S-VHS and VHS-C (Mini), plus 8mm and Hi8 tape, Digital 8, Betamax, Beta SP, Mini DV, DVCam and 3/4-inch U-Matic. If your recordings span different cameras or generations, these are concrete formats to discuss when requesting a transfer quote. A small cassette should not be described simply as a mini tape: copy the format printed on its shell or case.
Make a short inventory before contacting the business. Give each cassette a number and note its label, any known event and an estimated recording date. You do not need to know everything recorded on it. A note such as 'school concert, probably late nineties' can help distinguish it from an unmarked tape without turning a guess into a definite date. Photograph the labels so their context survives even if the cases become separated.
Keep film reels separate from 8mm video
The transfer page also names Super 8mm, 8mm and 16mm film, as well as photographs, slides and negatives. Its audio list includes audio cassette, mini cassette, microcassette, vinyl record, reel to reel, compact disc and Minidisc. These are separate media categories; 8mm film on a reel is different from 8mm video tape in a cassette.
For a mixed collection, group the items by medium and request an itemized estimate. You might start with the recordings that contain voices or events nobody has watched recently, then add still images that explain who appears in them. This gives the project a sensible order without assuming that every medium has the same price, handling requirements or delivery time.
Choose delivery for the way your family watches
Milestone Media describes digital delivery options including flash drive, DVD and CD across its transfer services. It also says transfers can be uploaded to the web. Those statements are a starting point for a conversation, rather than a specification for every VHS order. Ask which outputs apply to your tapes, what file type you would receive and whether any online delivery has access or download limits.
For an archive you plan to organize and share, request accessible video files and check that they work on your own computer. A DVD may suit a relative who still uses a disc player, while files let you keep additional copies and add family context later. Confirm the complete cost, any media or delivery charges and the expected completion date before leaving your collection.
Plan a Riverside handover and flag fragile tapes
The published contact address is 9441 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92503. Milestone Media lists Monday through Friday hours of 10am to 6pm, Saturday by appointment and Sunday closed. Confirm your visit arrangements, particularly for a Saturday handover or a collection that needs discussion.
Keep cassettes in their cases where possible and supply your numbered inventory. Point out cracked shells, loose tape, visible mold or earlier playback problems before anyone attempts a transfer. Ask whether those items can be assessed and whether extra work needs separate authorization. Avoid forcing a damaged cassette into an old player just to identify it. Agree how the original media will be returned and retain your own copy of the handover list.
Review the recordings before putting the cases away
When the digital copies arrive, match each one to your inventory. Check the beginning, middle and end, listen for sound and look for missing sections or unexpected repeats. Keep questions specific: identify the file and approximate playback time so a problem is easier to discuss.
Save a second copy on a separate device before rearranging or renaming anything. Keep the original tapes, too. Invite a relative to help identify faces, places and dates; their recollection can be recorded as a possibility when nobody is certain. A clear filename and a short description often make a recording much easier to find than its original cassette label.
From transferred files to a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Milestone Media. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Invite relatives, arrange albums and use Timeline with exact or approximate dates to find memories by year.
For a birthday gathering, a Live Watch Party can synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, their uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
