VHS and camcorder tapes can be considered together
The published tape list covers VHS, VHS-C, Video 8mm, Hi 8mm, Digital8 and miniDV. Nelson Conversions also lists 8 mm and Super 8 mm film, plus 35mm film, film negatives, slides and printed photos. These are different media, so describe each group separately when requesting a quote. A small reel of film and an 8mm video cassette should not be counted as the same item simply because their labels share a number.
For a mixed collection, start with a short inventory organized by the wording on each cassette or reel. Give items simple reference numbers and photograph their existing labels. You can then explain which recordings have priority without having to guess every running time. If a cassette has a cracked shell, loose tape, an unusual smell or visible contamination, tell the provider before attempting playback. Ask whether it can be assessed and whether any additional work would be needed.
Book the drop-off before setting out
Nelson Conversions says it operates by appointment only, with drop-off available in Roseville and White Bear Lake. Published Roseville hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. The website says White Bear Lake drop-off has the same hours, with evening and weekend hours available. Treat those extended options as something to arrange, rather than assuming you can arrive at any time.
The website asks customers to call for the address, so confirm the precise meeting location when booking. This is particularly useful when choosing between the two named drop-off areas. Use that conversation to ask for current pricing, expected completion time and how your originals will be returned. Those details are not established by the published service information here, and a collection containing several media types deserves a clear estimate before you hand it over.
Decide how you will use the finished recordings
The services page describes transfer to digital files, MP4 for video and JPEG for images respectively, and/or DVD. The website separately lists Cloud Download, USB drive and DVD as delivery methods. Discuss both the file type and the delivery method when ordering: receiving a disc and receiving files you can copy to a computer serve different everyday needs.
If relatives want to watch on different devices or add videos to a private archive, request a digital-file option and confirm exactly what it includes. Ask how files will be named, whether a long tape produces one file or several, and what you need to supply for USB delivery. For a cloud download, ask how long access remains available. These are useful ordering questions, not published promises about the provider's process.
Check a few familiar moments before filing everything away
Once the files arrive, compare them with your inventory. Open each video, check its beginning and end, and sample several points in the middle. Listen for speech as well as looking at the picture. If a recording appears shorter than expected, first consider whether the original tape might have contained blank space, then ask about anything you cannot explain.
Keep the original media while you review the results and make backup copies. A USB drive used for delivery should not become your only copy. Store another copy separately, and preserve the received files before making shorter clips for relatives. Invite someone who remembers the events to help identify people and dates; a useful title such as a person's name and an approximate year is easier to find later than an unexplained cassette number.
Bring the converted stories into a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Nelson Conversions' service. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Keep separate backups and choose the memories you want relatives to explore together.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping the family find memories by year even when a tape label is uncertain. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining through voice or text chat from nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories can collect everyone's photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their uploads go into the event album. Closing the link retains the memories. It is a useful way to place newly recorded moments beside the older footage that brought the family together.
