A mixed collection can include more than VHS
The website lists VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8 and Mini-DV, alongside 8mm cine film, DVD, Mini Disc and 35mm slides. This matters if family recordings arrived from several cameras over the years: a small camcorder cassette should be identified separately from a full-sized VHS tape. The published pricing also distinguishes VHS from camcorder tapes, so an accurate inventory makes an enquiry more useful.
Give each item a simple reference number and copy any label wording into a list. Add a likely date or occasion where you know it, but keep guesses separate from what the label actually says. Photographs of unfamiliar cassettes can help you explain what you have without trying to play them. Mouldy or damaged tapes appear in the provider’s service list; ask for an assessment of those items and what work might be possible before assuming they can be recovered.
Read the tape price and delivery charges together
The published price for a VHS tape of up to 3 hours is £17. A camcorder tape of up to 90 minutes is listed at £14. Those duration limits are part of the quoted prices, so mention longer recordings when requesting a total. Silent 8mm or Super 8 cine film has a separate rate starting from £0.20 per foot, with a 3-inch, 50-foot reel given as a £10 example. That film rate does not apply to VHS.
Delivery adds another choice: the price list states £10 for all video files stored on a USB, or £2 per file for video files uploaded to the cloud. Ask how your recordings will be divided into files before comparing those options. Confirm the complete amount for your collection, including any work on damaged items and any applicable tax treatment. The contact form invites you to say how many tapes you have for a no-obligation quote.
Arrange the handover before travelling
Drop-off is by appointment only, and the services page says local collection can be arranged. The homepage advertises free collection and delivery in the CV11 area. If that is relevant to your address, confirm the arrangement when booking; the stated CV11 offer should not be treated as a promise of free transport everywhere around Nuneaton.
Telephone and WhatsApp contact are published, alongside email and a contact form. Include your item count, the formats you recognise and your preferred output in the first enquiry. Ask for the expected completion time and how your originals will be returned. Keep your numbered inventory with you at handover so you and the provider can discuss individual tapes without relying on similar handwritten labels.
Choose an output you can check and keep
USB and cloud are both offered as conversion outputs. Before choosing, ask which file type you will receive and whether it will play on the television, computer or other device you plan to use. For a cloud option, ask how you access and download the files. Neither a USB choice nor a cloud choice should replace making your own backup.
There is a practical reason to inspect the result promptly: the provider says videos are kept on file for 2 weeks in case of queries, then deleted from its records. Ask when that period begins. On receipt, compare the files with your inventory, sample the beginning, middle and end, and check that sound is present where expected. Raise missing recordings or playback problems during that query window. Keep the original tapes and at least one separate copy of the digital files.
Let relatives help identify the newly converted scenes
After conversion, Memrial can provide a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Nuneaton VHS to Digital. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed. Invite relatives to add comments and stories; Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping everyone find a holiday or birthday by year even when the recording has no reliable date label.
A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat for discussing familiar faces. The free allowance is 3 hours monthly with up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos enter the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories.
