A DVD price ladder and a separate MP4 option
Pennylane's published video-to-DVD pricing starts at £20 for one video tape to DVD, including delivery. Two video tapes transferred to separate DVDs are listed at £14 each; three or more video tapes to separate DVDs are £12 each. The same page lists one video to an MP4 file at £15. These figures describe different outputs, so decide what you need before comparing the totals.
Delivery is explicitly included in the single-tape DVD line. The other quoted lines do not settle delivery charges or VAT treatment, and no recording-duration limit is stated in these details. Ask for a total based on your tape count, recording lengths and chosen output, including any USB or postage charge. If you want both a disc and a file, request a quote for that combination rather than adding the published prices yourself.
Choose an output your relatives can actually use
A DVD may be practical for someone who already watches discs on a television. An MP4 file can be a better starting point for organising recordings on a computer and sharing them through a private archive. Before ordering, check what your household's devices can play. Pennylane lists files, USB and DVD for camcorder transfers, but the precise delivery method for an MP4 order is worth agreeing in advance.
Make a short inventory rather than relying on memory: number each cassette, copy its handwritten label and note the format printed on the casing. Include any known recording date and whether a tape contains several occasions. Tell the provider about a cracked case, mould or a tape that previously jammed, and ask whether it can be assessed. Avoid attempting to play a visibly damaged cassette simply to discover its contents.
Hanslope collection or an order from further away
Pennylane publishes an address in Hanslope, Milton Keynes, and its video transfer page mentions dropping recordings off directly and collecting them. That page also states that it covers all of the UK. Local handover and an order from elsewhere are therefore both routes to discuss, although you should agree arrangements before travelling or sending irreplaceable tapes.
For a couple of tapes, the website describes video-to-DVD turnaround as usually 24 to 48 hours plus delivery. Treat that as a stated guideline for that service and quantity, rather than a deadline for every order or an MP4 promise. If a birthday screening is planned, give the actual date when requesting availability. Agree packing, tracking and the return of all original tapes alongside the converted output.
Keep cine reels separate from the tape estimate
If your collection includes film reels, Pennylane also publishes a cine transfer service. Its cine page quotes £7.00 for each 50ft spool, describes USB stick or DVD output, and gives a normal turnaround of approximately two weeks. These are cine-film details, so they should not be used to estimate the cost or timing of a video cassette order.
For a mixed collection, separate reels from cassettes in your inventory and ask for the two parts of the estimate to be identified. When the results arrive, check that each expected recording is present. Sample the beginning, middle and end, listen where sound is expected, and flag missing footage or playback problems promptly. Keep the physical originals and make a second digital copy in a separate location.
Let relatives help date and recognise the recordings
Conversion makes recordings watchable; a separate private family archive can make them easier to understand together. Memrial stores digital photos and home videos after conversion and does not convert physical tapes. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check file sizes when choosing what to upload, and keep your separate backup.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories about the people on screen. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so an uncertain summer holiday can still be found by year without pretending to know the day. A Live Watch Party synchronises an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away, with the host controlling play, pause and seek, alongside voice and text chat. The free allowance is three hours per month and up to six participants.
For a family anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link retains those memories. A new anniversary album can sit alongside converted footage of an earlier celebration, giving relatives a reason to revisit it and identify faces together.
