MP4 files or a DVD you can put in the player
The MP4 service lists an H.264 MP4 file, with AVI or MOV files also available. The DVD service says a video DVD is included and an MP4 digital file is available. These are different published options, so make your requested output explicit when arranging the transfer. If you want a DVD and a file, ask how that combination is priced and delivered.
For general family use, a digital file is a practical choice because you can keep copies and organize the recordings without depending on a disc player. A DVD may still suit a relative who prefers familiar equipment. If you plan to edit the footage, describe the editing software and intended project before choosing an alternative file type. The file extension alone does not tell you every technical detail of the transfer.
Read the tape prices by format and output
Perfect Image Video advertises MP4 transfer prices starting at $19.95 per tape, with volume discounts and no minimums. Its DVD page advertises prices starting at $14.95 per tape, also with volume discounts and no minimums. Treat those as starting prices, rather than a complete quote for every tape in a mixed collection.
The PAL VHS-to-DVD listing is $19.95 per tape, with quantity discounts available. Broadcast tapes have separate figures: $29.95 per tape for MP4, and $24.95 per tape for DVD. The broadcast listings name 3/4 U-matic, Betacam and HDV. Before committing, request an itemized total for your formats and chosen outputs, including any delivery charges, taxes or extra work. Ask whether recording length affects your order; the quoted tape entries do not establish a duration allowance.
Sort overseas VHS and film reels before handover
The explicit PAL VHS option is worth raising if tapes came from relatives abroad. Do not guess a recording standard from the cassette's appearance. Note where the recording was made, photograph any labels and let the provider confirm the appropriate service. For a damaged shell, suspected mold or a tape that previously jammed, ask about assessment before trying to play it again.
Perfect Image Video also publishes film transfer services for 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm, including sound or silent film. Keep those reels separate from videotapes when making your inventory, since film is priced differently. Give each item a simple reference number and retain a matching list. A label such as 'summer vacation, probably the early nineties' is more helpful than a confident date that nobody can verify.
Kearny Mesa drop-off and returning the originals
The video transfer page offers shipment or drop-off at the Kearny Mesa office. The website gives the address as 8977 Complex Drive, Suite C, San Diego, CA 92123, and publishes the phone number (858) 292-0818. Contact the business to arrange the handover and discuss your deadline before making a trip or shipping irreplaceable recordings.
The MP4 service states that all original video tapes will be returned with the order. Film reels and boxes are also returned with finished film transfers. Keep your inventory until everything is back. Before packing tapes away, play the returned files at the beginning, middle and end, check the sound, and compare filenames with your list. Preserve the originals and keep a second digital copy on a separate drive or another suitable backup location.
Let relatives help identify the people and years
Once conversion is complete, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is separate from Perfect Image Video. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes before deciding what to upload first.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories, then use Timeline to place memories with exact or approximate dates so they can be found by year. A graduation recording might have an exact date, while an unlabeled picnic may only have a likely summer. Those small contributions can make the footage easier to understand for younger family members.
A Live Watch Party synchronizes an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours each month and up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership, uploads collect in the event album, and closing the link retains the memories.
