A DVD for playback, or an MP4 for the next chapter
Photo Studio Ayr lists VHS, VHSC, 8mm, Hi8 and Mini DV transfers to DVD. It also lists those same tape formats for USB transfer, describing the result as a fully editable MP4 file. That distinction matters if you want to do more than play a recording from beginning to end.
A DVD can suit someone who already has a working DVD player and wants a familiar way to watch. An MP4 file is a practical starting point for organising recordings on a computer, making separate copies and uploading chosen videos to a private archive. Before choosing, check which files your own television, computer or other device can play. A USB socket alone does not settle compatibility.
If one relative wants a disc while another wants files, explain both uses when asking for a quote. Confirm whether both outputs can be supplied and what that would cost.
Read the tape prices with their duration limits
The published DVD rate is £9.00 per tape for up to 2hrs, under the VHS, VHSC, 8mm, Hi8 and Mini DV heading. For USB, the first hour is £25.00, including the USB stick, with each additional hour priced at £10. These are the website’s stated prices, so confirm the current total for your collection before proceeding.
The two charging descriptions deserve attention: the DVD entry is per tape with a duration cap, while the USB entry refers to hours. Ask how the USB charge applies across several short tapes, how partial additional hours are counted and how a tape longer than two hours is handled for DVD. Tax treatment, processing time and charges for unusual handling are not specified in these details.
An inventory makes that conversation easier. Write down the format, label and any known running time for each item. If the length is unknown, say so instead of treating the cassette’s capacity as its recorded duration.
Separate small video cassettes from cine reels
Photo Studio Ayr also advertises transfers of 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm cine film to DVD or USB. Its tape list separately includes 8mm video. These are distinct media, even though the names overlap, and the tape rates should not be used to estimate a cine film job.
Keep reels and cassettes grouped separately. Photograph their labels and containers, number each item on your inventory and keep handwritten titles. Ask how the originals will be identified and returned.
For tapes with visible mould, a damaged shell, a loose strip or a history of sticking in a player, describe the problem before attempting playback. Ask whether the item can be assessed and whether any specialist work is possible. A transfer listing does not itself promise repair or restoration.
Speak to Scott before arranging the handover
The website invites customers to call Scott on 01292 262688. Its contact page gives 70 Sandgate, Ayr, KA7 1BX, and the studio publishes hours of Mon-Sat 10-5:30. Confirm the arrangements for bringing in tapes, particularly if you need a discussion about mixed formats or damaged items.
The appointment-only statement for studio sessions, with Saturday bookings preferred, does not establish the rules for tape drop-offs. Ask about the transfer handover, expected completion date and collection.
Check the transfer before gathering everyone to watch
When your files arrive, check each one against your inventory. Sample the beginning, middle and end, listen to the sound and note whether the recording ends where expected. Keep a record of any issue so you can explain it clearly. Save an untouched copy before renaming, trimming or making excerpts.
Keep the original tapes and another digital copy in a separate place. Invite relatives to help identify faces, places and dates; their notes can be as useful as the footage itself.
Let an Ayr recording bring distant relatives together
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Photo Studio Ayr’s service. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose what to upload within that allowance while keeping your own backups.
Timeline lets you use exact or approximate dates to find memories by year. A summer holiday with an uncertain date can still sit near the right period. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. It is a useful way to place today’s reunion beside an older recording and add the stories people remember.
