Videotape transfer with a choice of digital files
The company's website makes a broad statement that all videotape formats are transferred. Its encoding page lists MP4, MOV, QuickTime, WMV and AVI among the available formats, and invites customers to bring their material in. These published details support a VHS transfer inquiry, but they do not set out a separate VHS price, completion schedule or specification for the resulting files.
Describe your tapes before arranging a handover, including anything marked VHS-C or recorded outside the United States. Ask which digital format the company recommends for your intended use. A file for everyday family viewing and a file intended for editing may call for different choices. Confirm the delivery medium, total quote and treatment of blank sections before work begins.
Keep reels and slides separate from the tape quote
Photo Video Productions also publishes film transfer pricing: $0.22 per foot transferred to DVD, excluding DVD stock, or $0.25 per foot transferred to MP4 or another file format, excluding USB stock. Those are film rates, not VHS rates. Ask for a current estimate that includes the relevant media costs and any applicable tax.
For slides, the website describes service levels ranging from hand cleaning and cropping at 1200 DPI to a 3000 DPI Deluxe service with image cleanup and color correction. This gives a mixed collection another decision point: which images need basic digitization, and which merit more individual attention? Keep your slide count, reel information and tape inventory separate so the estimate is easy to understand.
Agree on what should survive the transfer
The film transfer page says the company may attempt to improve or repair problematic footage where possible. It also explains that footage which cannot be improved or repaired may be removed from the finished product, with no charge for the removed footage. This statement concerns film; it does not establish an equivalent policy for videotapes.
That distinction is worth discussing if even a damaged fragment has family significance. Ask what editing is proposed and whether you can agree on how difficult material will be handled. For tapes with broken cases, visible mold or an uncertain history, describe their condition and request advice before playing them. Photograph labels, number each item and keep a simple list of likely contents. Leave uncertain dates marked as estimates.
Check the files while the labels still make sense
After conversion, compare each returned file with your inventory. Check the beginning, a few points in the middle and the ending; listen for sound as well as watching the picture. Try playback on the device your relatives will actually use. If a file seems incomplete or a sequence is difficult to identify, record the filename and playback time so you can explain the question precisely.
Keep the original tapes and other physical material after transfer. Save the delivered files in at least two separate places, and avoid overwriting the only copy when trimming a clip. Invite a relative to help identify faces or locations, recording their recollections alongside your own. A confident identification and a tentative guess should remain distinguishable.
Connect the different formats in a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for the digital photos and home videos after conversion. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Photo Video Productions. Its free plan provides 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your returned collection before deciding what to upload first.
A family anniversary might appear in a scanned slide and a home video recorded years later. Albums let you organize those files, while Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help you find memories by year. Invite relatives to add comments and stories, preserving the explanation of an image alongside the image itself.
Make watching together part of the project
Memrial's Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seeking, with voice and text chat so everyone can discuss a moment together. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants.
For an anniversary gathering, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link retains the collected memories. You could gather today's celebration there while keeping the converted recordings available for a shared look back.
