Start with the recording system, then count tapes
The standard NTSC price is straightforward because Pro Image Photo charges per tape regardless of length. A short birthday recording and a longer cassette therefore fall under the same published $29 MP4 rate within that group. This gives you a sensible basis for a preliminary budget, although you should still confirm the final total and any applicable charges before handing over the collection.
Betamax NTSC and PAL European-format VHS appear in a separate category: $35 per tape regardless of length, DVD or MP4, with a $60 minimum order. SECAM French-format VHS, VHS-C and similar tapes are listed with a $60 minimum order and a $40 DVD option capped at two hours. Ask how longer SECAM recordings are handled and whether a digital file is available; the published SECAM entry does not establish that option.
Commercial and broadcast cassettes such as U-matic have their own $120 listing, with exceptions applying. Keep those apart from family VHS when requesting a quote. A cassette's physical shape alone may not settle its recording system, so preserve any PAL, NTSC or SECAM markings and tell the provider where the footage was recorded.
Keep film reels on a separate quote
Pro Image Photo also lists 8mm, 16mm and Super8 movie-film transfer. Its reel-size menu includes a three-inch reel of approximately 50 feet at $30 for either a frame-by-frame scan to MOV at 1080p or DVD. Those are film specifications, not promises about the resolution or output choices of VHS transfers.
If you are bringing both reels and cassettes, make two inventories and ask for the output and cost of each separately. The film-related instructions mention supplying a USB or external drive of at least 8GB and choosing PC or Mac formatting. Confirm the storage arrangement for your tape order instead of assuming those film instructions apply to every service.
Match your inquiry to the Broadway store
The website identifies 2510 Broadway as store 102 and gives [email protected] for that location. It separately identifies the Amsterdam Avenue store and its own email. Use the Broadway contact for this listing and confirm the branch, timing and handover arrangements when arranging a drop-off or collection.
Ask for a tape-specific completion estimate and instructions for damaged cassettes. The published 24-hour estimate concerns online photo printing, so it should not guide plans for a VHS order. As general preparation, number the cases, photograph their labels and make a short list of contents. Flag loose tape, broken shells or suspected mold before attempting playback, and ask what assessment is possible.
Plan collection and your first playback check
Pro Image Photo's general terms require customers to collect completed work and supplied originals within the 30-day storage period after completion. Unclaimed items may be treated as abandoned, with a possible storage fee and eventual disposal. Set a collection reminder as soon as you receive notice that the order is ready.
For your own checks, play the start, middle and end of each returned file, listen to the sound and compare the contents with your numbered inventory. Test a file on the device you expect relatives to use. Keep the original tapes after conversion and save another copy of the files on a separate drive. These are practical archive habits, rather than statements about the provider's checking or backup policies.
Let relatives add the dates and stories
Once the recordings are digital, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes or form part of Pro Image Photo's transfer service. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your returned files before deciding which memories to add first.
Invite relatives to help identify the people and occasions. Memrial's Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording remembered as a summer in the early nineties can still be found by year without inventing a precise day. Albums, comments and stories can keep those recollections beside the footage.
For a family anniversary, Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video through the host's play, pause and seek controls, with voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free plan includes three hours monthly and up to six participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but need no archive membership, their uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
