Separate the VHS tapes from the camcorder formats
Rosin's website lists $29 for VHS, $19 for VHS-C, $19 for MiniDV, and $29 for Hi8 / Digital8. It also lists $29 for Betamax / Betacam and $29 for U-matic / ¾-inch. Those distinctions matter when an older collection contains similar-looking cassettes: use the format printed on the shell rather than guessing from its size or the camera you remember.
The published labels do not state a tape-duration allowance, tax treatment, or a complete job total. Before handing anything over, ask how your tape count and recording lengths affect the quote, and what delivery costs apply. Give each cassette a temporary reference number and keep a simple list of its label, suspected contents, and any visible damage. Tell the provider about a cracked case, loose tape, or suspected mold before attempting playback; ask what can be assessed or repaired without assuming restoration is available.
Decide how you want to receive and use the recordings
The delivery list includes a customer-provided flash drive at $0 and a DVD at $6, with up to 2 hours of video fitting on a single DVD. The free flash-drive line concerns that delivery item, not the transfer itself. Ask which choices apply to your particular order, how much drive capacity is required, and which file format you would receive.
Think about the next viewing occasion before choosing. A disc may suit a relative's existing player, while digital files can be useful for a computer or a private family archive. Ask whether you can receive files alongside a disc and what that would cost. If a recording exceeds the stated DVD capacity, confirm how it would be divided and labeled. Do not assume the flash-drive option guarantees compatibility with every television or phone.
Keep the film and slide parts of the collection distinct
For cine film, Rosin lists $19 for 8mm / Super8 per 3 inch reel, with 38¢/ft also shown, and $29 for 16mm film per reel. These are film prices, separate from VHS. Record reel sizes and ask how the reel and footage figures apply to the film you have.
Slides are listed at 90¢ each, with carousel prices of $69 for 80 ct and $99 for 140 ct. Negatives are listed at 90¢. The photo-related note says a $10 set-up and processing fee may be required, oversized photos may incur an additional charge, and undeveloped negatives cannot be processed. Preserve any existing slide order while making your inventory: sequence can help relatives recognize a trip or celebration later. Confirm the applicable charges before combining scanning with a tape order.
Check the returned files while the labels still mean something
When your digital copies arrive, open every file and sample the beginning, middle, and end. Listen as well as watch, check that the files correspond to your inventory, and note any unexpected gaps. Retain the originals and keep a separate backup of the digital files. One flash drive should not be the only surviving copy of an irreplaceable recording.
Invite a relative to help identify people and dates while those details are still available. Keep original labels in your notes even when renaming files for easier browsing. A useful filename can include a year, occasion, and tape reference; mark an uncertain year as approximate instead of turning a guess into a fact.
Bring the converted collection into a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Rosin's service. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes before uploading a large collection.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates so relatives can find memories by year. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause, and seek and relatives joining voice or text chat nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos enter the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. That gives new reunion pictures a place alongside the older recordings everyone has just watched.
