VHS and camcorder tapes in the same project
Scribs Studio lists VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Digital8, Mini DV and HDV among its accepted video formats. Its FAQ also lists scanning for loose photographs, photo albums, slides, negatives, scrapbooks and documents. That gives a family with both recordings and photographs a reason to discuss a combined order, while keeping the requirements for each medium clear.
The video service is for personal recordings only, excluding copyrighted or licensed video. Separate home recordings from commercial releases before asking for a quote. If a cassette has an unfamiliar label, send its format information first; a similar-looking shell does not necessarily identify the recording inside.
Tape counts, the minimum order and optional copies
Published tape prices are $20 per tape for 1 to 4 tapes, $18 per tape for 5 to 14 tapes, and $15 per tape for 15 or more. The digitization FAQ states a minimum order of $30, not including taxes. For a single tape, ask how that minimum applies to the final bill instead of assuming the listed per-tape rate is the whole amount payable.
The video-transfer page lists a playable DVD at $6, with approximately 2 hours per DVD. Optional USB flash drives are $12 for 16 GB, $14 for 32 GB, $16 for 64 GB, $22 for 128 GB or $32 for 256 GB; the drive size depends on the amount of digitized media. Confirm taxes and your chosen extras in the quote.
MP4 files and realistic picture expectations
The studio specifies H.264 MP4 files for digitized videotapes and DVDs, and its video page includes a download link for the finished videos. Playable DVDs are another published option. Decide who will watch the recordings and on what devices before choosing copies: files are useful for organizing and backing up, while a disc may suit a relative who already uses a DVD player.
Scribs Studio describes its work as a one-to-one transfer, with output quality reflecting the original videotape. It explicitly says it cannot fix original recording problems such as low light, blur, color issues or poor quality. Approach conversion as a way to access existing footage, and discuss any visible cassette damage or playback trouble before handing over an irreplaceable recording.
Arrange collection with a clear tape inventory
The website includes pickup and delivery up to 45 miles for digitization orders and asks customers farther away to make contact. Videotapes can also be mailed. Published office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5 PM EST; digitization pickup and delivery outside business hours or on weekends are by appointment only.
As preparation, number each tape and keep a matching list of label text, approximate dates and known events. Photograph the labels before packing. Ask relatives to identify people or places while the originals are still together, and flag mold, broken cases or loose tape for discussion rather than attempting a repair yourself. Agree on the handover arrangements before traveling or mailing anything.
Put the download deadline on your calendar
The digitization FAQ says most orders finish within 1 to 3 weeks, with timing varying by order size and the different media involved. It gives access to digitized media for 30 days, then retains it for an additional 30 days before permanent deletion. That extra retention period should not be treated as an extension of ordinary download access.
Download promptly and check each file opens, has audible sound where expected, and contains the beginning and end of the recording. Match files against your inventory before considering the project complete. Keep the original tapes and make independent backup copies of the digital files; a temporary provider download is a handover method, not your long-term family archive.
Bring relatives into the memories after conversion
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital photographs and home videos after conversion. It does not convert physical tapes or form part of Scribs Studio. Its free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check file sizes before uploading a selection, since that allowance is limited.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping relatives find memories by year even when a tape label only says something like a childhood summer. Invited relatives can add comments and stories that explain who appears on screen.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video with host play, pause and seek controls, plus voice and text chat for relatives near or far. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, uploads collect in the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories already contributed.
