Count the VHS tapes before choosing a batch
The published VHS table lists $24.95 each for quantities of 1-4 and $14.95 each for 5 or more, for transfers to DVD or USB. The quantity break is worth considering when recordings are spread across several households. Ask relatives whether they have tapes from the same celebrations before deciding what belongs in your first order.
Treat those figures as the published transfer prices and request a complete quote for your actual collection. Check whether any storage media, additional copies, tax, or other charges affect the total. The table does not state a recording-duration limit, so ask how longer tapes are handled. A list with one entry per cassette will make the discussion easier, particularly if some labels are missing or misleading.
Separate cassettes from movie reels
Sharp lists VHS-C, 8mm, 8mm cassette tapes, Super 8, 120 cassette tapes, and Mini DVs alongside VHS in its transfer formats. Those labels cover different kinds of material. Photograph unfamiliar items and ask the lab to identify them; a small cassette marked 8mm and an 8mm film reel should not be grouped together simply because their labels share a number.
For 8mm or Super 8 film to DVD/USB, the website gives a separate price of $24.95 plus 25¢ per foot. That film rate is distinct from the VHS quantity table. Keep reels and cassettes separate in your inventory so a quote can follow the correct service. If a tape has a cracked case, visible contamination, or a tangled section, describe it before bringing it in and ask whether it can be assessed.
Choose USB or DVD around the people watching
Sharp advertises USB or DVD as transfer destinations. DVD may suit a relative who wants to use an existing disc player, while digital files can be useful for organizing recordings and making backups. Before choosing USB, ask which file format is supplied and whether it will play on the computer or television you intend to use. Confirm whether a USB drive is included or needs to be provided.
If private online sharing is your eventual goal, explain that at the outset and ask about a suitable digital file. Avoid choosing an output only because it sounds familiar: the useful version is one your family can actually open. Keep a short note of any titles or divisions you would like to discuss, such as separating a graduation from the birthday recording that follows it.
Arrange the handover and check the results
Sharp publishes business hours of Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with Sunday closed. Confirm your visit and ask for the expected video-transfer completion date. The website also mentions a usual 24-hour turnaround for color film developing, but that timing belongs to photographic film, not VHS transfer.
Number each item on your list and photograph its label before handover. When the converted recordings come back, play the beginning, a middle section, and the end of each file or disc. Check sound as well as picture, and compare the contents with your inventory. Keep the original tapes and a second digital copy on separate storage; a single USB drive should not be the only home for an irreplaceable recording.
Bring the family into the recordings after conversion
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert tapes or form part of Sharp Photo & Portrait. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. You can invite relatives, arrange photos and home videos into albums, and add comments and stories that explain who appears on screen.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find a recording by year even when the cassette only says something like summer vacation. A relative might recognize the house or remember the occasion, helping you place a video without inventing a precise date.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause, and seek and relatives joining through voice or text chat nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album, and closing the link keeps those memories.
