DVD or downloadable files: compare the tape prices
The published standard rates for VHS, 8mm, Mini DV and VHS-C are £20 per tape for emailed delivery through WeTransfer and £15 per tape to DVD. For more than 10 tapes, the listed rates fall to £15 per tape for WeTransfer and £10 per tape for DVD. A batch of exactly 10 is outside that stated condition.
The same transfer page lists extra copies at £5 per extra copy and an additional charge of £5.00 per USB stick if you would like the files supplied on USB. Ask for a total covering your tape count, chosen output and any extra copies, including whether tax is included. The USB charge is per stick, so clarify how your recordings would be grouped before deciding.
For files, ask which video format you will receive and whether it works on the devices your relatives use. A USB stick describes the storage medium, while WeTransfer describes delivery. Neither alone tells you the file type or size. If you choose DVD, also ask how to obtain a digital copy for future backups.
Plan your Northampton enquiry around the actual tapes
Skears Photographic publishes its contact address as 203 Wellingborough Road, Northampton, NN1 4ED, and its telephone number as 01604 630675. Its tape transfer page says most orders are completed in 10 - 14 working days, depending on quantity. Treat that as an estimate to discuss for your batch, particularly if you need a recording for an anniversary or reunion.
Before contacting the shop, count the cassettes by format and give each one a simple number. Photograph the labels and note any known recording dates, people or occasions. Keep that list with your order details so you can match the returned files to the originals. Flag cracked cases, damaged tape or suspected mould and ask whether assessment is possible; do not try playing a visibly damaged cassette to find out what is on it.
Keep cine reels separate from video cassettes
A mixed family collection may include both video tapes and cinefilm. Skears Photographic lists cinefilm separately by footage, so those reel prices should not be used to estimate a VHS order. The cinefilm note says there is no audio and mentions DVD and MP4 availability. It does not establish that MP4 is the file format used for every video-tape transfer.
The published restriction also says copyrighted tapes cannot be transferred without written consent. If your collection includes a commercially produced recording or material whose permissions are uncertain, explain what it is before submitting it. Keep those items separate from your own home recordings so the enquiry is clear.
Make the returned recordings easy to recognise
When the conversion comes back, check each recording against your cassette list. Sample the beginning, middle and end, listen to the sound where you expect it, and check that the file opens on your usual device. Raise any apparent missing sections or playback problems with the converter while your order details are readily available.
Save downloaded files promptly and keep a second copy on a separate drive. Retain the physical tapes too. Give working copies descriptive names such as the occasion and approximate year, while preserving the delivered originals. Ask relatives to help identify unfamiliar faces or locations; their recollections can turn a recording labelled only with a number into something the next generation can understand.
From a completed transfer to a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Skears Photographic’s transfer service. You can invite relatives, organise albums and add comments or stories. Free signup needs no card and includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive. Check the size of your returned videos when deciding what to upload.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find memories by year even when nobody remembers the precise day. For a family anniversary, Live Watch Parties can synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.
Event Memories can gather new photographs and videos from that anniversary through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their uploads collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed, allowing the old recording and the new celebration to sit within the same family archive.
