A tape price that does not depend on running time
The published price is £15 per VHS videotape, whatever its length. Slide to Digital also offers still images taken from VHS recordings at an additional £1 per image. This could be useful when a particular moment would work well alongside family photographs, but choose those moments thoughtfully: an image taken from a recording is a different starting point from a scanned photographic negative.
Before agreeing an order, request the total for your collection and chosen output. The tape price alone does not establish every possible charge, and the published details do not settle VAT treatment or the cost of USB media for VHS orders. Posted VHS items have return postage added to the invoice. A short written estimate helps you compare the complete job and decide whether to transfer everything together or begin with a smaller selection.
MP4 on USB or a DVD for the living room
Slide to Digital says copied videotapes are supplied as digital MP4 movies on a USB flash drive. It can also transfer VHS content to DVD. For a family hoping to organise files on a computer and share digital memories later, the MP4 route gives a clear starting point. If someone mainly watches a DVD player, ask which disc option will work with their equipment.
Make the output conversation practical. Explain where you intend to watch the recordings and ask how individual tapes will be named, whether long recordings will be divided, and whether a sample file can be checked on your devices. These are questions to resolve with the provider, rather than features to assume are included. Keep a note linking each cassette label to the corresponding digital file so relatives can identify the recording later.
Arranging a Chelmsford handover or postal order
The published delivery address is in Writtle, Chelmsford, and the business says it covers Essex, including Colchester, Braintree and Brentwood, with a postal service available. Its homepage advertises free collection and delivery in the immediate Chelmsford area for small packages. The contact page phrases local collection as something that might be possible and asks customers to call. Confirm the arrangement for your particular VHS order before setting out or packing a parcel.
There is a separate collection statement for slides and negatives on orders of £50 or more, also limited to small packages. That condition should not be treated as a confirmed VHS threshold. For postal tapes, ask how to package them, agree the return arrangements and remember the stated return postage charge. Record what you send and keep your inventory until the originals and digital copies are back.
When the family collection also includes slides
Slide to Digital publishes 35 mm slide and negative scanning alongside its tape work. The scanning price is 50p per slide or negative, with an exception: fewer than 10 items cost £2 per individual slide or 35 mm negative. Scanned images can be supplied on USB, with an additional charge for the drive or the option to supply your own; CD or DVD can also be arranged. These are photographic service details, separate from the VHS price and output.
The published allowance of up to 2-4 weeks for scanning, cleaning and return depends on quantity. Ask for a VHS completion estimate separately. If combining photos and tapes, group them by medium and give each group a simple inventory. Let relatives help identify dates and people before sending anything away, while leaving uncertain descriptions marked as uncertain.
Check the recordings, then bring relatives into the archive
Before handing over tapes, note damaged cases, loose parts or visible contamination and ask whether the provider can assess them. Avoid attempting repairs merely to make a cassette playable. When files arrive, check the beginning, middle and end of each recording, listen to the sound and compare the contents with your inventory. Keep the original tapes and make another digital backup before reorganising the delivered files.
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Slide to Digital. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording labelled only as a summer holiday can still be found by year.
For a family birthday, a Live Watch Party can synchronise an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice and text chat. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories.
