Match each cassette to the right price category
The published VHS category includes editing and colour contrast processing. The separate category covering Video 8, Hi8, Digital 8, DV, MiniDV, HDV and DVcam starts from £7 per tape, with editing and colour processing included. It also offers one DVD copy per tape or a secure cloud upload. These are starting prices for different tape families, so the lower camcorder figure should not be used to budget for VHS.
Before requesting a quote, count your tapes by the format printed on each cassette. Keep a separate count for anything you cannot identify, and photograph its label and casing rather than guessing. Give each tape a simple reference number that you can use throughout the order. Ask for the total against that inventory, including any duration conditions, extra copies, delivery charges and applicable tax. The published starting figures alone do not establish the final cost of a mixed collection.
Film reels need their own calculation
SnappyFix also lists conversion of 8mm and Super 8 cine film. Its published charge is £20 for the first 100 Ft, then £10 per 100 Ft after that, with editing and colour processing included. The output choice is a DVD copy or secure cloud upload. This is a film-length calculation, not a price per video cassette.
If your collection includes both reels and tapes, describe them separately in the enquiry. Ask how film length is assessed and how the finished footage will be named. Keeping those categories distinct makes it easier to understand the quote and later connect each digital recording with the original object.
Decide what the cloud copy must let you do
The DVD or secure cloud choice is worth discussing before conversion. A DVD may suit someone who already watches discs, while downloadable digital files can be easier to organise and copy between devices. SnappyFix's published wording does not specify the cloud file format or access period, so ask whether you can download the complete recording, what file type you receive and how long the upload remains available.
Also ask what the included editing involves. If you want the whole recording preserved, including quiet moments between events, say so. For a family archive, retaining a complete copy and making shorter viewing versions later can be useful. Colour processing should not be taken as a promise that every fault will disappear. Mention mould, a broken casing or a tape that previously jammed, and ask what can be assessed before anyone tries to play it.
Arrange the handover and keep an inventory
SnappyFix's conversion page describes booking an appointment for collection. It also states that digital copies and originals are returned using Royal Mail First Class recorded delivery. Ask which arrangement applies to your order and agree the handover and return details. Its published opening hours are 9AM to 6PM, Monday to Saturday; these do not establish a processing time.
Keep your inventory and label photographs until the order is complete. When the files arrive, match them against the list and sample the beginning, middle and end of each recording, checking picture and sound. Note missing footage or unexpected breaks while the order details are still easy to find. Retain the original tapes and make another digital backup before relying on any single disc, device or cloud account.
Turn finished recordings into a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion; it does not convert tapes and is not part of SnappyFix. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage, with no card needed. Check the size of your finished videos against that allowance, and keep an independent backup. Invite relatives to help identify people, places and occasions through comments and stories.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a summer holiday remembered only as happening in the mid-nineties can still be found by year. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours monthly with up to 6 participants. For an anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in without needing archive membership, their photos and videos enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
