VHS and camcorder recordings on the same list
The video formats listed by SR Photography are VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS-C, Betamax, Video 8, Hi 8, Digital 8, DV and Mini DV. This gives you a concrete list to compare with the labels on your cassettes. A small cassette should not be identified by size alone; read the wording on its shell or case and make a separate group for anything you cannot confidently name.
Before enquiring, count the tapes by format and write down any known running times. Label each item with a simple reference number without covering existing information. Keep a matching list of titles such as “school concert” or “holiday”, and mark whether that description comes from the original label or someone’s recollection. If a tape is damaged, smells musty or has visible contamination, describe its condition and ask whether it can be assessed before attempting playback.
DVD or MP4: choose around how you will watch
SR Photography explicitly offers video transfer to DVD or MP4 file. DVD can suit someone who already watches recordings on a disc player, while MP4 is a practical starting point for storing and sharing a digital family collection. Think about who will use the result: a relative watching on a television may have different needs from someone organising files on a computer.
Ask how MP4 files are supplied, whether each tape becomes a separate file, and what information accompanies the finished transfer. Confirm compatibility with your intended devices before ordering. If both discs and files would be useful, ask whether that combination is available and what it costs. The published transfer information here does not establish prices or completion times, so obtain a quote that covers your actual formats, quantities and chosen output.
Cine reels, audio and photographs need their own plan
The transfer offering also includes Cine 8mm and Super 8, with DVD or MP4 output. Audio cassette and reel-to-reel recordings are listed separately, with CD, MP3, WAV or AIFF output. Those audio choices belong to the audio service; they should not be treated as additional VHS delivery formats.
SR Photography also describes scanning negatives and slides into digital files for viewing on computers, smart televisions, phones and tablets. If your collection combines film reels, recorded voices and photographs, prepare an inventory for each medium. A slide of a birthday and a tape of the same occasion may eventually sit together in your archive, but they need separate conversion instructions. Ask about the appropriate scanning specification and file delivery for photographs instead of assuming the video arrangements apply.
Arrange the visit, then check the returned recordings
The contact page requests prior appointments and notes that the business may be out shooting or filming. Its published appointment-only hours are Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 6.00pm; Saturday, 10.00am to 5.00pm; and Sunday, 10.00am to 4.00pm. Confirm your visit directly rather than treating those hours as permission to arrive unannounced.
When the files come back, compare them against your inventory. Open every file, check sound where you expect it, and sample the beginning, middle and end. Note any apparent gaps so you can discuss them while the original recordings are still easy to identify. Keep the tapes and other originals, and maintain another digital copy separately from the device you use every day. These are useful personal checks, rather than statements about the provider’s procedures.
Add the dates and voices that make footage meaningful
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of SR Photography’s transfer service. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes before deciding how much of the collection to upload.
Invite relatives to help identify people and occasions through comments and stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making memories easier to find by year even when a cassette only says “summer”. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties allow 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For a family anniversary, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed, so the occasion can become part of the longer family record.
