Choose the video output before comparing costs
The website lists Video to DVD/MP4 Video at $29.95 per 120 minutes. It also describes a DVD with an included MP4 file, while stating that a flash drive is not included. That detail matters if you expect to come away with files on a portable drive: ask how the MP4 will be supplied and whether you need to provide or purchase storage.
The AVI/MOV option is listed at $40.00 per 120 minutes, with up to 120 minutes of video per file. Recordings that exceed that runtime require additional files. A separate professional videotape service is listed at $74.95 per tape, with one tape per DVD. These are different service categories, so ask which applies to your recordings and request a total quote, including any applicable taxes or additional charges.
For ordinary family viewing, think about the devices relatives actually use. MP4 is a practical format to discuss for computers and digital sharing. If editing is your priority, check the requirements of your editing software before selecting AVI or MOV; the filename extension alone does not settle every compatibility question.
Keep film reels separate from videotapes
Tailor-Made also publishes movie film transfer choices, including high definition at 1920 x 1080 and 4K at 3840 x 2160. These are film services, not promises about the resolution of a videotape transfer. A family collection containing both reels and cassettes needs separate questions and separate estimates for each medium.
One film handling detail deserves attention before handing anything over: the website says film will be returned on 8mm film reels and the original reels returned empty, within terms stating a 400-foot minimum. If a reel carries handwritten dates or family notes, photograph those labels and ask how the film will be identified after transfer. Do not assume this film policy describes the return arrangements for tapes.
Use photographs to explain the recordings
The photo and slide archiving service saves JPG images in folders you request. This gives you an opportunity to preserve context alongside a video project: a group of vacation slides might identify people or places in an otherwise unlabeled recording. Agree on meaningful folder names before submitting the images.
At home, build a short inventory with one identifier per tape, reel or photo group. Copy existing labels exactly, then add your own tentative notes separately. Invite a relative to help identify a wedding venue or a childhood home, but mark uncertain dates as approximate. For cracked, tangled or visibly damaged tapes, describe the problem to the provider rather than attempting playback or assuming restoration is available.
Plan the handover and the first viewing
The contact page publishes 205 East Pennsylvania Boulevard, Feasterville, PA 19053, and hours of Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Call 215-322-8444 or email [email protected] to discuss your collection and confirm arrangements. Useful questions include accepted tape formats, expected completion time, file delivery and how originals are returned.
When the files arrive, compare them with your inventory. Check the beginning, middle and end of each recording, listen for audio and confirm that longer recordings have all their parts. Keep the originals while you assess the result. Save an untouched copy of the delivered files before editing, and maintain a second backup somewhere separate from your everyday device.
Bring relatives into the digital collection with Memrial
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Tailor-Made Transfers. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed. Compare the size of your files with that allowance before uploading a long collection.
Timeline lets you give a memory an exact or approximate date so relatives can find it by year. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away join through voice and text chat. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories can collect new photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their uploads go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories. That lets a newly converted reunion recording sit alongside contributions from the next gathering.
