Choose the copy your family will actually use
The three output choices serve different habits. A DVD may suit someone who still uses a disc player; a download or USB stick gives you files to organise and copy. Before ordering, ask which file format is supplied and whether it will play on your intended computer or television. A USB socket alone does not answer that compatibility question.
For the download option, the provider says the link remains available for a minimum of 90 days and can be shared with family or friends at no extra charge. Treat that window as time to collect your files, check them and make independent copies. A delivery link is useful for getting the recordings home, but it should not become your only way of reaching them.
VHS and camcorder tapes can belong in the same enquiry
The published conversion list covers VHS, Video 8, Digital 8, Hi8, VHS-C, Mini DV, Mini HDV, Micro MV, SVHS and Betamax. There is also specific NTSC support for Video 8, Digital 8, Hi8, VHS-C, Mini DV and VHS. If recordings came from abroad, mention that when checking your order rather than assuming every listed format has the same NTSC provision.
Make a short inventory using the markings on each cassette. Number the tapes and photograph their labels, keeping uncertain descriptions such as 'possibly school concert' visibly uncertain. Ask relatives what they remember before replacing handwritten titles. If a cassette has a broken shell, loose tape or signs of mould, describe it to the provider before sending it or trying to play it. Do not assume an ordinary transfer includes repair.
Plan around postal returns, even if you live nearby
Local customers can use a drop box, but the instructions are to place the order online and then contact the business for its location and drop-off details. There are no retail premises to call into, collection is not possible, and completed orders are returned by post. Knowing this beforehand helps you choose suitable packaging and avoid an unplanned visit.
The FAQ asks customers to allow 14 days for despatch from receipt of video tapes. Orders of 20 or more video tapes, or cine film conversions, may take longer. Despatch is not arrival, so allow for postal travel as well if the recordings are intended for an anniversary. All tapes are returned with the order, including when you choose downloads.
Check the order total and the contents you expect back
The FAQ describes automatic checkout discounts of 20% for orders over £45, 25% for orders over £150 and 30% for orders over £250. Those thresholds are useful when comparing a small batch with a combined family order. Confirm the complete current charge for your tapes and selected output, including any delivery or other charges, before committing.
There is also a content policy worth knowing: the provider says it edits out TV recordings on VHS tapes. If a cassette alternates between television and home footage, flag that in your enquiry. After delivery, compare the results with your inventory, check the beginning, middle and end of each file, and listen for sound. Keep the original tapes while resolving any questions about missing or unexpected material.
Organise the downloaded years in a private family archive
Once conversion is complete, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Tape To DVD Transfer. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your returned videos when deciding what to upload, and retain another backup independently.
Invite relatives to help identify the people and places, arrange photos and home videos into albums, and add comments or stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, letting you find memories by year even when a cassette says only 'summer holiday'. Keep an estimated date as an estimate; a relative may later recognise the trip and narrow it down. That context can make an anonymous file much easier to find again.
Let an old recording start a new family occasion
An uploaded birthday video could become an evening together through Memrial's Live Watch Parties. Playback is synchronised, with the host controlling play, pause and seek, while relatives nearby or far away join in through voice and text chat. The free plan includes 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants. Pausing at a familiar face gives everyone time to share what they remember.
For a new birthday or reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need membership of your archive; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link retains the collected memories. It is a practical way to gather the present-day occasion alongside the older recording, without relying on one person to receive every family's pictures separately.
