Tapes2Digi VHS to Digital: Ossining and Westchester, NY

Tapes2Digi gives families comparing VHS to digital options a useful starting point: separate published prices for DVD transfers and digital files, plus information for both VHS and smaller VHS-C tapes. Its published contact details are 100 Main St, PO Box 616, Ossining, NY 10562. Treat these as mailing details and confirm instructions before sending tapes. The website also says pickup and delivery can be arranged in the Westchester County, NY area. Your first decision is how you want to watch the recordings once they have been transferred.

DVD and digital files have different price rules

The VHS page lists digital-only transfers, without DVDs, at $10 per transfer for footage under one hour and $12 for one to two hours. Longer recordings have additional price steps, so ask for a quote using your actual tape lengths. VHS-C has its own page with the same published under-one-hour and one-to-two-hour digital rates.

For VHS to DVD, the website lists $12 for one tape onto one DVD. Under its stated one-hour-per-DVD arrangement, footage over 60 minutes that needs two DVDs costs $14 total; three DVDs cost $16. There is also a conditional option for two tapes, each under 30 minutes: if they fit together on one DVD and you choose that arrangement, the published price is $18 for that DVD.

Confirm the total before proceeding, including any drive, collection or delivery costs and applicable taxes. A tape label may describe capacity rather than the amount actually recorded, so tell Tapes2Digi when a duration is only a guess.

Choose files around the devices your family uses

Tapes2Digi describes direct-to-PC transfer as producing an MPEG2 file, with .AVI, .WMV or .H264 options on its VHS page. The VHS-C page lists those alternatives too. Ask which option will play on your computer, television or phone, and whether the delivered file is suitable for any family archive you intend to use.

Its FAQ says customers can send a flash drive or hard drive for digital files. It also describes delivery through Dropbox or a hosted download link, and says a USB drive can be supplied. Agree on the delivery method and any storage charge in advance. If receiving a download, ask how long it will remain available and save your own copies promptly.

Arrange the handoff and a realistic completion date

The Westchester pickup and delivery offer is something to arrange directly, rather than an automatic collection service. Ask whether it applies to your address and agree on the handoff details before packing anything.

The turnaround FAQ explains that video transfers happen in real time: a two-hour tape takes two hours to transfer, followed by additional work. Completion depends on the number of orders and tapes, and Tapes2Digi offers an estimate when contacted. If a family reunion is approaching, give the date at the outset and ask which recordings could be ready first. Keep a numbered inventory so both parties can identify each tape without relying on faded handwritten titles.

Prepare the tapes, then check what comes back

Keep VHS and VHS-C tapes clearly identified, and photograph their labels before handing them over. Add a short note for recordings that matter most, such as a wedding ceremony or a relative speaking to camera. If a cassette has a cracked case, loose tape, visible mold or a history of playback trouble, describe it and ask whether it can be handled. Do not assume transfer includes repair or restoration.

After delivery, compare filenames with your inventory. Open every file and check the beginning, a middle section and the end, listening as well as watching. Retain the originals and keep a second digital copy separately from your everyday device. Invite relatives to help identify people and places while the details are still familiar.

Put dates and family knowledge beside the footage

Once conversion is complete, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Tapes2Digi. You can gather photos and home videos into albums, invite relatives, and add comments and stories.

Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help you find memories by year. An uncertain summer holiday date can still give a recording a useful place in the family history. Memrial includes 2.0 GB of free storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your converted files when deciding what to upload first.

Watch an old recording together and collect the next occasion

Memrial Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, while voice and text chat let people exchange recollections. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.

For a birthday or reunion, Event Memories provides a secure contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership to add photos and videos, which collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. Pairing an old reunion recording with pictures from a new gathering can give different generations something concrete to talk about.

Q: Can I send you my hard drive to put digital files on? A: Yes, if you would like a digital file, you can either send a flash drive or hard drive to me. If you do not have one, I can actually "Dropbox" a file to you, or host it on my website and send you a link to it. I can also supply a USB drive with a nice label on it.

Q: How fast is your turnaround? A: It depends on how many orders I have and how many tapes you need done. Remember, that video is transferred in real time, which means if a tape is 2 hours long... it takes 2 hours to transfer, and then an additional 30-45 minutes to enhance and burn. If I am not busy.. I would say to figure about 8-10 tapes per day. I can give you an estimate when you contact me. Q: Is my footage kept confidential? A: Of course. I am the only person that will view your footage, to make sure it is copied and looks good.

Questions about Tapes2Digi and your family videos

Does Tapes2Digi transfer VHS-C as well as VHS?

Yes. Its separate VHS and VHS-C pages describe transfers to DVDs and digital files. Identify the smaller VHS-C cassettes when requesting your quote.

Can I supply my own drive?

The FAQ says you can send a flash drive or hard drive for digital files. Ask about required capacity and drive compatibility before sending it.

Will anyone view the recordings during transfer?

Tapes2Digi says in its confidentiality FAQ that the person carrying out the work is the only person who views footage, to check the copy. Ask directly about file retention and deletion if those details matter to you.
