Compare the two transfer options before counting copies
The published USB pricing specifies a £25 minimum order. Thereafter, each tape costs £20.00 when it is less than two hours, or £25.00 when it is more than two hours. Additional USB copies cost £15.00 for each stick provided. The DVD pricing has the same minimum and duration-based tape prices, with additional DVD copies ranging from £5.00 to £8.00 each depending on tape duration.
Ask how the minimum applies to your order and how a recording lasting exactly two hours is charged, since the published categories do not state that boundary. Also confirm the full payable total and any tax treatment. Bulk discounts are advertised for both options, with customers asked to call for details; no fixed discount scale is given.
For USB, ask which video file format you will receive and check that your intended computer, television or other device can open it. A USB stick's capacity alone does not answer that question. If choosing DVD, check that you have a suitable player and consider whether you also want files for a family archive. Agree that output before the conversion begins.
Arrange the right Loughton handover
Tapes2USB's contact details identify a home office at 174 Roding Road and a studio at 'Soundings', Clays Lane, both in Loughton. Visits are by appointment. Its FAQ describes evening and weekend drop-offs and collections at the home office, and weekday arrangements at the studio. Confirm the location and time directly before setting off.
The business names Loughton, Debden, Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, Epping, Woodford, Chingford and Theydon Bois among the communities it is situated to serve. That makes local handover worth discussing if you are nearby. Keep a written inventory of the tapes you leave, with a simple number for each cassette, so that you and the provider can identify the same recording without relying on faded handwritten labels.
Use the transfer window to gather the missing context
The FAQ gives an average of seven to fourteen days for completing most videotape transfer orders. Treat this as a planning estimate and confirm the timing for your collection, particularly if the files are wanted for an anniversary or family gathering.
Before handover, photograph the labels and note any suspected damage, loose parts or signs of mould. Ask about assessment of affected tapes instead of assuming that conversion includes repair. Avoid testing a visibly damaged cassette in an old player just to find out what is on it.
You can also ask relatives what they remember about each label. 'Summer holiday' becomes much easier to find later when someone can add a likely year, the place and the people present. Record uncertainty honestly. An approximate date is more useful than a confident date that turns out to be wrong.
Check the files while the short backup period is running
Tapes2USB says it keeps a backup of DVD or USB conversions for fourteen days after the final product is provided to the customer. That is a reason to review your order promptly. It is not a substitute for maintaining your own copies.
Match the returned recordings to your inventory. Open each file or disc, check sound as well as picture, and sample the beginning, middle and end. Note missing material or playback problems clearly when raising questions. Make a separate backup of digital files, retain the original tapes, and use descriptive filenames without discarding the tape numbers.
Turn a converted recording into a shared family occasion
Once conversion is complete, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Tapes2USB. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose uploads with that limit in mind and keep independent backups.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping relatives find memories by year. You could place a holiday recording in its likely summer, then invite someone who remembers it to add a comment or story.
Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining through voice and text chat, nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties include three hours per month and up to six participants. For a reunion, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed.
