Tazer Media Productions: VHS Digitisation in Southampton

Tazer Media Productions offers VHS digitisation alongside several camcorder tape formats, making it a useful option to investigate when a family collection spans different cameras and decades. Southampton is the area in this listing, and the business also states that it is based there. Its conversion page separates the cost of transferring each tape from the cost of the disc or USB stick you take home. That distinction helps when planning a small project or a larger collection.

One collection, several kinds of cassette

The website lists VHS, VHS-C mini camcorder tapes, 8mm camcorder tapes covering Hi8, Video8 and Digital8, and MiniDV. These are separate tape formats, so start by reading the markings on each cassette rather than grouping every small tape together. The VHS-C and 8mm service pages currently publish the same conversion pricing as normal VHS tapes.

Make a short inventory with a number for each tape, its format and whatever the label says. Photograph the labels before handing anything over. A description such as summer holiday, probably in the late nineties, is useful even when the date is uncertain. Ask relatives which recordings matter most; identifying a wedding or a grandparent's voice can help you decide where to begin without needing to play every cassette yourself.

Separate the transfer bill from the copy you choose

The published conversion cost is £15 for the first tape and £10 per extra tape. Output charges are listed separately: DVD in a clear plastic sleeve is £5 per disc, Blu-Ray in a clear plastic sleeve is £6 per disc, a digital copy on a 16GB USB stick is £10 per stick, and a digital copy on a 32GB USB stick is £15 per stick. Ask for the complete quote and confirmation of any tax treatment before agreeing to the work.

Bundle offers also appear on the website, with output prices remaining unchanged. Their wording refers to more than 10, 20 and 30 tapes, while the worked examples use exactly those quantities. If your collection sits at a threshold, have the qualifying quantity and final conversion total confirmed directly. There is no need to guess which example applies to your order.

Decide where the converted video will be watched

Tazer Media Productions gives approximate capacity examples of one to two tapes on a 4.7GB DVD, eight to ten on a 25GB Blu-Ray, and four to six on a 16GB USB stick. It explicitly says these estimates can be higher or lower. Tape count therefore gives a starting point for discussing output, rather than a guarantee that a collection will fit on one item.

Think about the actual devices your relatives use. A disc may suit someone with a compatible player, while digital files can be easier to copy, organise and upload to a private archive. Ask what file type will be supplied on USB, whether it will play on your computer and television, and how individual tapes will be named. Choosing Blu-Ray does not by itself establish that the original picture will gain detail.

Arrange the Southampton handover and a careful first viewing

The conversion page makes the customer responsible for dropping off and collecting VHS tapes and digital copies. Arrange the handover before travelling, and ask for an expected completion date. If a cassette has a damaged shell, loose tape or suspected mould, describe its condition first and ask whether it can be accepted. Do not attempt a home repair merely to make it playable.

After collection, compare the returned items with your inventory. Open every digital file and sample the beginning, middle and end, checking sound as well as picture. Note any missing section or playback problem and discuss it with the converter. Keep the original tapes, and make a separate backup of the digital files before treating a USB stick as your only copy.

Turn the finished files into something relatives can revisit

Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Tazer Media Productions. You can organise uploaded photos and home videos into albums, invite relatives, and add comments or stories. Free shared archive storage is 2.0 GB, with no card needed; check your video sizes when deciding what to upload first.

Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a holiday remembered only by its year can still be found alongside other memories from that period. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining through voice and text chat, nearby or far away. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants.

For an anniversary gathering, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos or videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. It is a practical way to place new family moments beside the older footage that prompted the celebration.

Any issues like this and I will always communicate with you to find out what you want to do. 8. Why £15 for the first tape and £10 for the rest? Do you have cheaper options? So, it is quite common practice to charge less the more tapes you convert. Not just myself, but a lot of the other companies out there that do this have similar price styles. This is to make it worth our while to do tapes. If you have a lot, then of course we can offer you a small discount. If we charged the lowest amount on the first tape, it just would not be worth our time unfortunately. Even a single tape can take up to 6-8 hours depending on if it was recorded in Long Play or Short Play. If the tape was 3 or 4 hours in SP then in LP it will be double that.

Questions about Tazer Media Productions and your family videos

Does Tazer Media Productions convert VHS-C as well as VHS?

Yes. The website lists VHS-C mini camcorder tapes alongside VHS, and the VHS-C page currently states that its pricing is the same as normal VHS pricing. Identify your cassette format when enquiring.

Are discs or USB sticks included in the tape price?

The published page lists conversion costs and output costs separately. Request a total covering both the tapes and your chosen discs or USB sticks, including any applicable tax.

Can I assume a large collection qualifies for a bundle price?

Ask first. The website advertises bundle deals, but its threshold wording and examples differ. Output-format charges remain the same on those deals, so the conversion discount is only one part of the overall bill.

Can Memrial preserve the tapes themselves?

Memrial stores digital photos and videos after conversion. Keep the physical tapes and a separate file backup; use the private archive to organise and share the digital memories with relatives.
